**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Composed by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nervousness, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was on the brink of starting my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a first-year student. Diving into unfamiliar territory wasn’t something my previously timid and reserved nature was used to. Now, reflecting on this past year, I recognize it has been filled with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what lessons did this year impart, and what is my current standing?
One of the initial and most anxiety-inducing challenges I encountered was forging friendships. This aspect of beginning university can indeed be overwhelming, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it may be a concern for you as well. On the day I moved into my accommodation, a few days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself to anyone. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, both at the university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and all it required was engaging in casual conversations with others in the same boat.
So, what have I gained from this experience? I realized that taking that first leap at the beginning of the year is always worthwhile. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, fret not! There will be numerous ice-breaking events and chances to connect with fellow students. I also learned that being your true self is the best approach. With such a diverse array of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with your interests and values.
Another considerable challenge was navigating the workload and the escalating complexity of the material. There was undeniably a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even steeper transition from the first term to the second. Being plunged into such an environment can shake your confidence—you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. What aided me through this was the realization that everyone is facing similar struggles. If you’re grappling with a concept, I can almost assure you that others are too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This could be the most vital lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out to your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next observation: the faculty in the Materials department are remarkable. They genuinely wish for your success and recognize the challenges students encounter. They empathize with us and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year to tackle any concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. At the year’s onset, I took a step forward by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This opportunity allowed me to connect with the staff, which has proven invaluable. There are various avenues to engage with faculty, and this is one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My key takeaway here is to leverage the available support—you can never receive too much assistance.
In summary, this year has illuminated that the anxious feelings preceding and during university are largely unfounded and can be alleviated through the array of support offered by staff and colleagues. It’s demonstrated to me that I’m never truly alone, and it has taught me how to find joy even amid the stresses of exams and deadlines.
