**Reflections on My First Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and ambiguity regarding what awaited me. I was about to start my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, plunging into the vibrant world of university life seemed intimidating. Looking back now, I recognize a year that has been life-changing—filled with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of happiness. But what insights have I gained from this journey, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered early on was the fear of making new friends. This is a common concern for many new students, and I was no different. On my first day moving into student housing, just prior to the start of the term, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too timid to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I’m pleased to report that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had—friends who feel like a second family.
How did I achieve this? It began with small interactions, such as engaging in light conversation with others who were equally apprehensive. I quickly discovered that taking initial steps was essential at the outset of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease right away, that’s completely fine—there are numerous icebreaker activities and chances to bond with peers. Most importantly, I learned that being genuine is the best strategy. With such a varied student body at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Adjusting to the Academic Shift
Another significant challenge was adapting to the increased academic workload and the heightened complexity of course material. The leap from A-levels to university was substantial, and the transition from the first term to the second term felt even more demanding. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or doubt your capabilities when witnessing others study and questioning whether you’re keeping pace.
What assisted me in navigating this was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you find yourself having difficulty grasping a concept, there’s a good chance others are as well. The vital lesson I learned during my first year is to reach out for assistance—be it from classmates or faculty. This is possibly the most significant takeaway from my first year: do not hesitate to obtain support.
### Helpful Staff and Pastoral Assistance
On the topic of support, the personnel in the Materials department have been remarkable. They genuinely aim for student success and are understanding of the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept the lines of communication open, addressing our worries and providing direction.
I didn’t fully embrace the pastoral resources available to me until the end of the year, and I wish I had taken advantage of them sooner. Volunteering as a year well-being representative was a courageous choice for me, but it ultimately became one of the most rewarding decisions I made. It facilitated connections with staff members, which were invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and I wholeheartedly recommend seizing these opportunities. The assistance they provide is there for a purpose, and one can never have too much support!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to understand that much of the apprehension I experienced—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—was often unwarranted. There is an abundance of support available, whether from staff or fellow students, to help you navigate the challenges ahead. I’ve realized that I’m never entirely alone, and I’ve learned how to balance enjoying my time while managing the stress of exams and deadlines.
This year has been a journey of development, and I cherish the experiences that have shaped me. To any future students reading this: take the plunge, embrace the difficulties, and remember that assistance is always close by.
