**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, anxiety, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of commencing my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and withdrawn, plunging into such a monumental life transition felt intimidating. Now, as I reflect on an academic year brimming with development, challenges, and happiness, I recognize how transformational this experience has been. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

### Taking the Leap: Forming Connections
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was the task of making friends. For numerous incoming students, this represents one of the foremost apprehensions about commencing university, and I was no different. On my initial day in student accommodation, just days prior to the beginning of term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, far too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to the present, and I am delighted to say I’ve forged some of the best friendships of my life here at Imperial.

The pivotal moment arrived when I motivated myself to initiate small conversations with individuals who were experiencing the same situation as me. That minor step laid the groundwork for the formation of a second family, both within my course and throughout the university. My most significant takeaway? Make the effort early on. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. And above all, be authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter people who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Academic Challenges: Balancing the Workload
Adjusting to the academic expectations of university was yet another challenge. The transition from A-levels to university-level studies was considerable, and the leap from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your competence when you observe others appearing to flourish.

What assisted me the most was the awareness that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you find yourself grappling with a concept, it’s likely others are facing it too. The essential strategy is to seek assistance—be it from your peers or faculty members. Learning to pursue support is arguably the most crucial skill you can cultivate in your first year.

### Supportive Staff: An Invaluable Resource
Speaking of support, the staff within the Materials department have been exceptional. They truly care about students’ success and understand the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open with us and offered a plethora of resources to help us cope with both academic and personal challenges.

I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support available until year-end, and I wish I had done so earlier. One of the best decisions I made was to become a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which turned out to be an invaluable experience. Whether through formal positions or casual encounters, familiarizing yourself with the staff can significantly impact your experience. My suggestion? Make the most of the support systems offered to you—you can never receive too much assistance!

### Lessons Learned
Looking back, this year has taught me that the anxiety I experienced—both before starting university and throughout the year—was frequently misplaced. With the abundance of support from both staff and fellow students, I was never completely isolated. I’ve learned how to manage the stress stemming from exams and deadlines while still savoring moments of joy and fun, and I’ve become more self-assured in the process.

As I gear up for the next chapter of my university experience, I am thankful for the challenges, personal growth, and friendships that have characterized my first year. To anyone about to embark on their own university journey: take the plunge, embrace the support surrounding you, and trust that you will discover your niche.
