**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was about to embark on my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone naturally shy and reserved, stepping into the unknown was quite a task. Now, as I reflect on an academic year filled with development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment, I can look back at what I’ve experienced and the progress I’ve made.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered was developing friendships. If you’re a future student, this might resonate with your worries as well. On my first day settling into accommodation—just days before classes officially started—I spent the whole day confined in my room, too fearful to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the closest friendships of my life.
The secret? Taking that first step. It all started with casual conversations with others who were just as apprehensive as I was. Gradually, these interactions blossomed into a second family here at Imperial. If you’re anxious about making friends, keep in mind that there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet new people. Most importantly, be true to yourself. With such a diverse student community, you are sure to find people who align with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adjusting to the increased workload and complexity of university-level coursework was another major challenge. The leap from A-levels to university was stark, and the transition from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities, especially when observing others studying and worrying if you’re lagging behind.
What aided me was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If something is unclear for you, it’s likely that others are having the same issue. The most crucial lesson from my first year was the importance of asking for assistance—whether from fellow students or faculty. This simple action can create a significant difference.
### Assistance from Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the Materials Science and Engineering department is outstanding. The lecturers and support staff truly care about student success and are understanding of the hurdles we face. They encourage open communication year-round, responding to student inquiries and offering guidance.
While I didn’t leverage the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had connected with it earlier. Assuming the role of a year well-being representative was one of the proactive steps I took at the beginning of the year, and it turned out to be a fulfilling experience. It enabled me to forge connections with staff members that proved essential. Whether through formal positions or informal conversations, familiarizing yourself with your instructors and support staff is one of the best decisions you can make. Make the most of the available help and resources—you can never have excessive support!
### Insights Gained
This past year has shown me that the apprehension I experienced before and during university was often unwarranted. With abundant support from both faculty and peers, I was never truly isolated. I’ve learned to tackle challenges, seek help when needed, and discover joy even amid the stress of exams and deadlines.
In retrospect, my first year at Imperial has been a life-changing journey. It’s been a voyage of self-exploration, strength, and development, and I eagerly anticipate what the future has in store.
