**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, fully immersing myself into university life felt intimidating. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize a time of incredible personal development, various challenges, and plenty of enjoyment. But what insights has this year offered me, and how do I feel about it now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends

One of the most anxiety-inducing obstacles I encountered was the task of forming friendships. Many incoming students fret over this, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it’s likely on your mind as well. On my initial day settling into my accommodations, only a few days before the term commenced, I spent the entirety of the day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to the present, and I can assertively say that I’ve established some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated with a modest dialogue with fellow students who were just as apprehensive as I was.

So, what has been my takeaway? I realized that taking a chance at the outset of the year is always beneficial. If you’re not quite ready or at ease, that’s perfectly fine! There are numerous social events and chances to engage with new people. Most importantly, I discovered that embracing your true self is essential. Among the diverse group of individuals in the course and university, you are certain to connect with those who share your values.

### Navigating the Academic Workload

Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. There was certainly a noticeable leap from A-levels, and the transition from the first term to the second was even more striking. Being in such a rigorous academic setting can sometimes undermine your confidence, particularly when observing others studying and feeling as though you’re lagging behind. However, one thing that aided me through this was the realization that everyone is navigating similar struggles. If something isn’t clear to you, likely, others are grappling with it as well.

The most crucial lesson here? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Whether it’s from fellow students or faculty, asking for support is vital during your first year.

### The Value of Faculty Support

This leads me to my next observation: the faculty within the Materials department are outstanding. They genuinely wish for your success and understand the obstacles students commonly face. Throughout the year, they maintained continuous communication with us, addressing our issues and providing support. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available to me until the year’s conclusion, and I regret not doing so sooner.

At the start of the year, I took a bold step and became a well-being representative for my cohort. This role facilitated deeper connections with the staff, which has proved to be invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the most beneficial things you can do for yourself. My primary takeaway here is to fully embrace the support available—you can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

In summary, this year has revealed to me that the trepidation I felt before entering university, and even during the year, was frequently unfounded. With the abundance of support from both faculty and fellow students, those apprehensions can be diminished. I’ve learned that I’m never genuinely alone, and I’ve gained insight into balancing the enjoyment of university life with the unavoidable pressures of exams and deadlines.
