**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and doubt regarding what awaited me. I was on the brink of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and cautious, plunging into this new phase felt quite intimidating. Now, as I reflect on this time, I observe an academic year brimming with personal development, challenges, and immense enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained from this journey, and where do I stand now?
### Forming Friendships: The Initial Major Challenge
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was the task of forming friendships. If you’re a prospective student reading this, you might be experiencing similar worries. On my first day settling into my accommodation, just prior to the semester kicking off, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve forged some of the most incredible friendships I have ever known. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, particularly within my program. It all began with casual conversations and engaging with others who were in the same situation as me.
So, what did I take away from this? I understood that taking that initial step at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There are ample ice-breaking events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, I came to realize that being authentic is crucial. With a myriad of distinct personalities throughout the course and university, you’re bound to encounter individuals who resonate with you.
### Confronting the Workload and Academic Demands
Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. There was clearly a significant shift from A-levels, and an even more substantial transition from the first term to the second. Being in such a demanding environment can sometimes shake your self-confidence. You might observe others studying and feel as if you’re lagging or inadequately prepared. What aided me during those times was the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you don’t grasp something, chances are there are numerous others facing the same difficulty. The crucial thing is to seek assistance. This has likely been the most vital lesson I took away from my first year—don’t hesitate to ask for help from your peers and educators.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
Speaking of assistance, I can’t stress enough how wonderful the staff within the Materials department are. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize the challenges students confront. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open with us, addressing our issues and providing direction. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, and I wish I had embraced it sooner.
At the year’s onset, I made the bold choice to become a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect more with the staff, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to cultivate relationships with the faculty, and it’s one of the most advantageous moves you can make for yourself. My most significant takeaway from this experience is to fully engage with the support available to you. You can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting on this past year, I have learned that the apprehension I felt prior to and during university was largely exaggerated. There are numerous support mechanisms in place, both from staff and fellow students, designed to guide you through the hurdles. I’ve realized that I’m never genuinely alone, and I’ve figured out how to balance enjoying myself alongside the unavoidable pressures of exams and deadlines.
