**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself engulfed in a whirlwind of nerves, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what the future held. I was on the brink of embarking on my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been rather introverted and cautious, plunging into such a fresh and demanding setting felt overwhelming. Now, as I reflect on the past academic year, I recognize a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment. But what precisely did I take away from this experience, and what is my current state?
### Forming Friendships: The Initial Major Hurdle
One of the most anxiety-inducing challenges I encountered was the task of forming friendships. For many, this is often the most daunting part of commencing university, and if you are a prospective student perusing this, it might also be a concern for you. On the day I moved into my accommodation, just a few days prior to the official start of the term, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too intimidated to venture out and meet new people. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly declare that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced—friends who truly feel like family.
So, what was my takeaway? I came to understand that taking a bold step at the beginning of the year is vital. Even if you don’t feel prepared or at ease, fret not! There will be ample ice-breaking activities and prospects to connect with others in similar circumstances. And most importantly, be genuine. With an array of diverse individuals within the course and university, you are sure to discover those who resonate with your interests and values.
### Confronting the Workload and Academic Trials
Another challenge I faced was the increase in workload and the complexity of the content. There was a marked escalation from A-levels, and the shift from the first term to the second proved to be even more demanding. Being thrust into such an intense academic atmosphere can sometimes undermine your confidence, particularly when observing others engaged in their studies and feeling as though you’re lagging behind.
What assisted me during this period was the realization that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If you find something puzzling, it’s very likely that others are encountering similar struggles. The most crucial lesson I gleaned in my first year was the importance of seeking assistance—whether from fellow classmates or faculty. Never hesitate to ask for help when it’s needed.
### Encouragement from the Faculty
Speaking of faculty, I cannot stress enough how wonderful the teaching and support staff in the Materials department are. They sincerely wish for your success and are aware of the difficulties students encounter. They keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year and are always prepared to provide assistance. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until the conclusion of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier.
At the start of the year, I took a chance and became a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to cultivate relationships with faculty members, which proved to be incredibly advantageous. There are numerous opportunities to familiarize yourself with the staff, and doing so can greatly enrich your university experience. My primary lesson? Make the most of the support available—you can never have too much help!
### Concluding Thoughts
All in all, this year has shown me that the anxiety I felt before and during university was largely unwarranted. With the extensive support provided by both staff and fellow students, I learned that I was never truly alone. More importantly, I discovered how to balance enjoying myself with coping with the unavoidable stress associated with exams and deadlines.
