**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was consumed by nerves, fears, and uncertainties regarding the future. I was about to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As a person who had always been somewhat shy and introspective, taking the plunge into this new environment was well beyond my usual comfort zone. Now, reflecting on a year filled with personal development, challenges, and priceless experiences, I can appreciate the extent of transformation this journey has provided. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?

### Conquering the Fear of Socializing

One of the most intimidating challenges I encountered was the task of meeting new people and forging friendships. For numerous incoming students, this represents a primary source of stress. I can clearly recall my first day settling into my accommodation. I spent that entire day secluded in my room, too hesitant to venture out and introduce myself to others.

Fast forward to now, and I can assertively say I’ve built some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known. My classmates have become like a second family, both within my program and throughout the university. It all began with small gestures—engaging in light conversation with others who were equally apprehensive.

What did I learn from this experience? Taking that first courageous step at the beginning of the year is truly rewarding. Even if you feel unprepared, there are ample icebreaker events and chances to connect with peers. Most critically, I discovered the importance of being authentic. In such a diverse university setting, you’re sure to find others who resonate with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another crucial obstacle was adapting to the heightened workload and intricate course content. The leap from A-levels to university was significant, and the change between the first and second terms felt even more challenging. It can be overwhelming to witness others studying and seemingly excelling, leading to self-doubt.

What supported me through this period was the understanding that everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If you’re struggling with a concept, it’s likely that others are as well. Developing the skill to seek assistance became vital during my first year. Whether turning to classmates or instructors, reaching out for support transformed my experience.

### The Value of Compassionate Staff

One of the remarkable elements of my journey has been the tremendous assistance from the Materials department staff. Their commitment to student success is evident, and they show genuine understanding of the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they fostered open lines of communication and offered various types of support.

Though I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral care until the year’s end, I wish I had engaged sooner. Early on, I took on the role of a well-being representative for my year, which allowed me to establish connections with staff members. This proved to be invaluable. Whether through official positions or informal chats, building relationships with the staff is among the best things you can do for yourself. My main takeaway? Utilize the support offered to you—there’s no such thing as having too much help.

### Insights Gained

Looking back on my first year, I’ve come to realize that much of the anxiety I felt prior to starting university was unneeded. With the abundance of support from both staff and fellow students, there’s always someone available to assist you. This year has taught me that I am never truly alone and that it is feasible to navigate the pressures of assessments and deadlines while also enjoying moments of happiness and leisure.

Ultimately, university represents a pathway for personal growth, and despite the initial appearance of challenges being formidable, they are all integral to the process. If I could offer a single piece of advice to new students, it would be: embrace the journey, stay true to yourself, and don’t hesitate to seek out help.
