**Musings on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed by feelings of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was about to start my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted and quiet, jumping into this new experience was quite intimidating. Now, reflecting on a year brimming with development, obstacles, and lots of enjoyment, I genuinely value the knowledge I’ve gained and the distance I’ve traveled.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most frightening elements of commencing university was the prospect of forging new friendships. If you’re an incoming student perusing this, you’re likely worried about it too. I must confess, on my first day in student housing—just a few days ahead of the official term—I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself to anyone.
Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly affirm that I’ve formed some of the most remarkable friendships of my life. These relationships have evolved into a second family for me, both within my course and across the university landscape. What aided my progress? Taking that first bold step. Even if you’re not prepared to jump right in, don’t fret—there are numerous icebreaker activities and chances to meet others in the same position.
The most profound lesson I learned? Be authentic. With a diverse student body, you’re sure to connect with individuals who resonate with your interests and values. It’s all about initiating that first interaction.
### Facing the Academic Hurdles
Adapting to the educational expectations of university was another major obstacle. The transition from A-levels to university-level studies was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel daunted or question your capabilities, particularly when observing peers who seem to excel.
What guided me through this? Reminding myself that we’re all in the same situation. If a concept feels unclear to you, others probably share that struggle as well. The trick is to seek assistance—whether it’s from fellow students or instructors. Developing the ability to ask for support is arguably one of the most crucial skills you can gain in your first year.
### Assistance from Faculty and Well-Being Support
A highlight of my experience has been the amazing support from the Materials Science faculty. They genuinely want students to thrive and recognize the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open, addressing our worries and providing direction.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the available well-being support until late in the year, I wish I had sought it out earlier. Accepting the position of year well-being representative was a bold move for me, but it turned out to be one of the best choices I made. It enabled me to forge valuable relationships with staff members, which proved to be incredibly beneficial.
If there’s one piece of wisdom I’d share, it’s to make the most of the support systems available. Whether it’s academic guidance or pastoral aid, there’s no such thing as too much support.
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on my initial year, I’ve realized that the apprehension I felt—both before starting university and throughout the year—was often unfounded. With the substantial support from faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely isolated. This year has equipped me with the ability to manage stress from exams and deadlines while enjoying moments of happiness and fun.
So, to anyone on the brink of embarking on their university adventure: embrace the difficulties, take those courageous leaps, and don’t shy away from seeking help. You may surprise yourself with the extent of your growth.
