**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty as I prepared to embark on my journey in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a freshman. Immersing myself in the unfamiliar wasn’t something my previously timid and reserved nature was used to. Now, as I reflect on a year filled with growth, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment, I recognize how transformative this experience has been. So, what have I discovered, and where do I find myself today?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

A major source of intimidation for me at the university’s onset was the prospect of making friends. This is often a significant concern for many aspiring students. On my first day settling into university housing, a few days prior to the start of classes, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself.

Now, looking back, I can confidently assert that I have formed some of the most cherished friendships in my life. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, integrating with colleagues from my course and beyond. All it took was stepping beyond my comfort zone and sparking small conversations with those in a similar position.

What insight have I gained? Taking that first step is always worthwhile. Even if you feel unprepared, fear not—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, remain true to yourself. With the diverse community at university, you’re bound to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Navigating Academic Obstacles

Another considerable challenge was getting accustomed to the rigorous workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift between the first and second terms felt even more pronounced. Being in such a high-pressure academic setting can sometimes undermine your confidence, particularly when observing peers studying and questioning your own capabilities.

What aided me in overcoming this was realizing that everyone is facing similar challenges. If something is unclear to you, it’s likely that others feel the same way. The essential strategy is to seek assistance—this is arguably the most crucial skill to hone in your first year. Whether it involves reaching out to fellow students or consulting staff, do not hesitate to raise queries.

### Assistance from the Materials Department

Speaking of staff, I cannot stress enough how outstanding the Materials department is. The instructors and support personnel genuinely care about students’ success and are understanding of the obstacles we confront. They keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year and are always ready to lend a hand.

I didn’t fully make use of the pastoral resources available until later in the year, and I wish I had taken advantage of them sooner. At the beginning of the year, I took a leap by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position allowed me to cultivate relationships with staff members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are several avenues to connect with the staff, and I highly encourage taking advantage of these initiatives. My key takeaway here is to utilize all the support available—you can never get too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

In retrospect, this year has illustrated that the anxiety I felt before and during university was largely unwarranted. With the extensive array of support from both staff and fellow students, help is always accessible. I have learned that I’m never truly on my own, and I’ve discovered how to enjoy life while managing the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.

As I look ahead, I’m thankful for the personal development, friendships, and lessons I’ve acquired during my first year at Imperial. To anyone preparing to begin their own university experience: take the plunge, welcome the challenges, and remember that support is perpetually within reach.
