**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a freshman in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been timid and introverted, diving into such a new environment felt quite intimidating. Now, reflecting on a year packed with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment, I can appreciate just how much I’ve grown and the insights I’ve gained.

### Conquering the Challenge of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting challenges I encountered at the beginning of university was finding friends. If you are a potential student reading this, you might be experiencing similar feelings. On my inaugural day in student accommodation, just a few days before classes started, I spent the whole day tucked away in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet new people.

Fast forward to now, and I can confidently assert that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever known. These bonds have evolved into my second family here at Imperial, all starting with brief chats with others who were equally apprehensive.

What did I take away from this experience? Taking that first step of faith at the beginning of the year is vital. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease immediately, that’s perfectly fine! Numerous icebreaker activities and opportunities to meet others are available. Most importantly, I discovered that simply being yourself is the most effective strategy. With a diverse student body throughout the university, you’re sure to find others who align with your interests and beliefs.

### Adjusting to Academic Demands

Another major obstacle was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second term was even more challenging. It’s common to feel inundated and question your abilities when you observe others studying with confidence.

What aided me during these trying times was the acknowledgment that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If something isn’t clear to you, chances are there are others in the same position. The crucial point is to seek assistance—whether from peers or faculty. This realization became my most valuable lesson during my first year: don’t hold back from requesting help when it’s necessary.

### The Value of Supportive Faculty

Regarding support, the personnel in the Materials department are exceptional. They sincerely want students to thrive and are fully aware of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they fostered open communication with us and consistently exhibited understanding toward our issues.

I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral assistance provided until late in the year, and I regret not doing so earlier. In the beginning, I did take a step forward by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to establish connections with faculty members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are many methods to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway here is to leverage the available support systems—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

In summary, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt before entering university—and even throughout the year—was quite often unfounded. Numerous resources and support structures exist, spanning from staff to fellow students, to aid you in overcoming any challenges. I’ve come to understand that I am never truly alone, and I’ve learned how to balance having fun with managing the unavoidable pressures of exams and deadlines.

Looking back, I take pride in how much I’ve progressed and am eager for what’s next. To anyone getting ready to commence their university experience: take that plunge, be authentic, and don’t hesitate to seek help. You can do it!
