**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, fear, and uncertainties about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been introverted and reserved, diving into this new phase was quite a daunting challenge. Reflecting now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and memorable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Building Friendships
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was finding friends. If you’re a future student reading this, you might share similar feelings—it’s entirely normal. On my first day settling into accommodation, just days before classes started, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced.
The pivotal moment? Taking that first step to connect with others. A casual chat or brief interaction with someone else in the same situation can foster remarkable bonds. Over time, I discovered a second family at Imperial, both within my course and throughout the university.
What did I learn? First, it’s beneficial to step out of your comfort zone early on. If you’re not ready immediately, don’t fret—there are numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet people. Second, simply be yourself. With a diverse community of students, you’re bound to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another considerable challenge was adjusting to the heavier workload and the heightened complexity of the content. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when observing others studying and questioning if you are keeping pace.
What benefited me the most was understanding that everyone is having a similar experience. If you’re finding something difficult to grasp, it’s likely that others are as well. The crucial thing is to seek assistance—whether from your fellow students or the teaching staff. Learning to ask for help is arguably the most vital skill you can cultivate during your first year.
### The Value of Supportive Faculty
Speaking of assistance, the faculty in the Materials department are outstanding. They genuinely care about student success and are considerate of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication with us, addressing our worries and providing guidance.
I must confess, I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. One of the most beneficial choices I made was becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role not only enabled me to connect with faculty members but also provided me with insight into the resources accessible to students.
If there’s a piece of advice I would impart, it’s to fully leverage the assistance offered to you. Whether it’s academic help, pastoral care, or simply forging connections with staff, these resources are invaluable.
### Key Insights
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve realized that the anxiety I felt—both prior to commencing university and throughout the year—was often unwarranted. With the extensive support from staff and fellow students, I was never truly isolated. This year has taught me how to manage stress from exams and deadlines while also savoring joyful moments.
Therefore, to anyone preparing to embark on their university journey: embrace the challenges, take those courageous leaps, and don’t hesitate to reach out for help. You’ll evolve in ways you never expected and create lasting memories.
