**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the brink of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, stepping into the unknown felt quite daunting. However, as I now reflect on my inaugural academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, challenges faced, and unforgettable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Building Friendships

One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered at the outset was the fear of making friends. Entering university can be intimidating, and for prospective students, this may be a major worry as well. On my first day at student accommodation, just prior to the official start of term, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself.

Fast forward to now, and I can proudly proclaim that I’ve made some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. These bonds have evolved into a second family for me, both within my program and across the wider university community. All it required was stepping outside my comfort zone and engaging in small talk with fellow students who were experiencing similar feelings.

So, what’s the lesson? Take that leap of faith at the beginning of the year. If you’re not quite ready or don’t feel at ease immediately, don’t stress—there will be ample icebreaker activities and chances to connect with others. Above all, remain true to yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Addressing Academic Challenges

Another notable challenge was adapting to the demands of the coursework and the heightened complexity of the material. The difference between A-levels and university was stark, and the transition from the first term to the second proved even more difficult. It’s easy to become daunted or doubt your capabilities when you observe others studying and seemingly thriving.

What guided me through this experience was the understanding that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If you encounter something you don’t grasp fully, it’s likely that others are grappling with it as well. The crucial point is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or the professors. Cultivating the ability to ask for help is arguably the most important skill you can acquire in your first year.

### The Value of Support

Speaking of assistance, I cannot stress enough how remarkable the staff in the Materials department are. They have a genuine desire to see students succeed and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Over the year, they kept lines of communication open, responding to our concerns and providing support.

Although I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support until late in the year, I regret not doing so sooner. One of the best choices I made was to become a year well-being representative. This position not only allowed me to advocate for my peers but also provided an opportunity to forge solid connections with the staff—a genuinely enriching experience.

My recommendation? Utilize the support systems offered to you. Whether it’s academic advice, emotional support, or merely getting to know your instructors, you can never have too much help.

### Insights Acquired

Looking back on my first year, I’ve realized that the nerves I experienced—both before starting university and throughout the year—were frequently baseless. With the extensive support from staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. This year has taught me how to navigate the stress of exams and deadlines while also embracing moments of joy and personal development.

To anyone preparing to embark on their university adventure: welcome the challenges, take those necessary leaps of faith, and remember that support is always close at hand.
