**Insights from My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
About ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with nerves, uncertainty, and self-doubt as I geared up to embark on my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). Coming from a shy and introverted background, the prospect of immersing myself in university life seemed quite intimidating. However, reflecting on the last academic year reveals a time of significant personal development, challenges, and memorable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting elements of beginning university was the prospect of making new friends. If you are an incoming student, this could be among your primary worries. On my inaugural day in student housing, just days prior to the official start of term, I opted to stay in my room the entire day, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself to anyone. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had—friends who feel like family.
How did this transformation occur? It initiated with minor steps, like engaging in light conversations with fellow newcomers who were equally nervous and unsure. I realized that taking small leaps of faith early on is essential. If you’re not quite ready at first, that’s perfectly fine—there are numerous icebreaker activities and chances to connect with others throughout the year. Most importantly, I figured out that being your authentic self is essential. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Addressing Academic Hurdles
Adapting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of university-level material posed another considerable challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second term was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities, particularly when observing others study and worrying that you might be lagging behind.
What assisted me in navigating these hurdles was the understanding that I wasn’t isolated in my struggles. Everyone was experiencing similar challenges, and if I struggled with a concept, it was likely that others did as well. The most important lesson I learned was the importance of seeking assistance—whether it be from classmates or staff. Requesting help is not a weakness; it’s a crucial skill that can completely change your experience in your first year.
### The Value of Supportive Faculty
A highlight of my experience has been the remarkable support offered by the Materials Science faculty. They sincerely care about the success of students and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained an open line of communication and were always ready to respond to our needs.
Although I didn’t make full use of the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. Early in the year, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my year, which enabled me to forge connections with staff members. This proved incredibly beneficial, and I urge others to seize similar chances. Whether through formal positions or informal interactions, getting to know your lecturers and tutors can dramatically enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Always feel free to utilize the support systems accessible to you—there’s no such thing as too much help!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on this year, I’ve recognized that the anxiety I experienced prior to and during my university journey was often unfounded. With an abundance of support from both faculty and fellow students, I came to understand that I was never truly alone. I also discovered how to balance the stress from examinations and deadlines with enjoyable and uplifting moments.
In conclusion, my first year at Imperial has been a transformative experience. It has highlighted the importance of stepping outside my comfort zone, seeking help when necessary, and embracing the opportunities that lie ahead. If you are about to embark on your own university journey, understand that feeling nervous is perfectly normal—but also recognize that you are capable of achieving success in ways you may not have yet considered.
