**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was about to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been introverted and reserved, plunging into this new phase felt overwhelming. Now, as I reflect on an academic year rich with development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment, I can see how much I’ve grown and how far I’ve progressed.
### Conquering the Fear of Friendships
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered at the beginning of university was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may be a concern for you too. On my first day in student housing, a few days before classes started, I spent the whole day tucked away in my room, too anxious to go out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can confidently say I’ve made some of the closest friends I’ve ever had—friends who resemble a second family to me.
So, what shifted? It all began with simple conversations and the realization that everyone else was experiencing the same feelings. Taking that first step to engage with others, even if it felt awkward, made a significant impact. If you’re not prepared to jump in immediately, don’t stress—there are numerous icebreaker activities and chances to connect with peers throughout the year. The crucial takeaway? Be authentic. With such a diverse crowd at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adapting to the academic pressures of university was another major challenge. The transition from A-levels to university work was apparent, and moving from the first term to the second felt even more difficult. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your skills when surrounded by capable classmates.
What assisted me in managing these hurdles was the understanding that I wasn’t on this journey alone. If I struggled to grasp something, others were likely facing similar difficulties. The most valuable lesson I learned was to seek help—whether from peers or faculty. Seeking assistance isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s a vital skill that can significantly ease your first year.
### Guidance from Staff
One of the highlights of my experience has been the exceptional support from the Materials department staff. They genuinely care about students’ success and empathize with the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication and were always ready to address our issues.
Although I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until the end of the year, I regret not doing so sooner. Taking on the role of a well-being representative was a leap of faith for me, but it turned out to be incredibly rewarding. It provided me with an opportunity to connect with faculty members, which proved to be invaluable. Whether through formal positions or casual exchanges, fostering relationships with staff is one of the best investments you can make for yourself. My suggestion? Make the most of the support and resources available—you can never have too much assistance.
### Insights Gained
Looking back on this past year, I’ve come to understand that many of the fears I harbored—both prior to and during university—were unfounded. With the extensive support from staff and fellow students, I was never truly alone. This year has taught me how to navigate stress from exams and deadlines while savoring moments of joy and self-discovery.
If there’s one message I’d share with my past self or anyone gearing up for university, it’s this: don’t allow fear to hold you back. Take that leap, embrace the challenges, and have faith that you will find your way.
