**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was enveloped in feelings of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the future. I was about to set off on my voyage as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had consistently been introverted and quiet, plunging into this new phase felt daunting. Reflecting on this past academic year, I see it as a period of development, challenges, and numerous unforgettable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Connections
One of the most intimidating parts of commencing university was the task of making friends. If you’re an incoming student reading this, it’s likely a concern you share. On my first day of moving into my accommodation—just days before classes started—I spent the whole day tucked away in my room, too apprehensive to go out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the greatest friendships of my life.
The pivotal moment arrived when I motivated myself to initiate small conversations with others who were feeling just as uncertain. Through these interactions, I discovered a supportive community here at Imperial. The essential takeaway? Dive in early. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous social events and opportunities to engage with others. Most importantly, remain authentic. With such a vibrant community at Imperial, you’re sure to connect with people who align with you.
### Addressing Academic Hurdles
Adapting to the volume of work and the complexity of the material was another significant challenge. The leap from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s natural to feel overwhelmed and doubt your capabilities, particularly when you notice others flourishing.
What assisted me in navigating this was understanding that we’re all facing similar challenges. If something is tough for you, others are likely experiencing it too. The best piece of advice I can offer is to seek help—whether it’s from fellow students or faculty. Learning to ask for assistance is perhaps the most beneficial skill you can cultivate during your first year.
### The Significance of Support Systems
On the topic of support, the faculty in the Materials Science department have been outstanding. They genuinely care about our success and understand the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication with us, addressing our worries and providing guidance.
Although I didn’t fully tap into the available pastoral support until the latter part of the year, I wish I had accessed it earlier. Becoming a year well-being representative was one of the proactive steps I took at the beginning of the year. This role enabled me to foster connections with staff members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are myriad ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can substantially enhance your university experience. My most significant insight? Utilize the support networks at your disposal—you can never receive too much assistance!
### Closing Thoughts
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve discovered that much of the apprehension I experienced—both leading up to and during university—was often unwarranted. There are numerous support avenues available, from faculty to fellow students, ready to help you face any hurdles. This year has taught me that I’m never truly alone and that it’s possible to juggle the stress of exams and deadlines while still making space for joy and fun.
If you’re about to embark on your own university adventure, know that it’s completely normal to feel apprehensive. Seize the opportunities, lean into the support surrounding you, and don’t forget to relish the journey.
