**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself engulfed in nerves, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was about to start my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been quite shy and reserved, venturing into the unknown felt quite daunting. Now, as I reflect on an academic year filled with personal growth, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment, I can consider what I’ve discovered and my current standing.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was forming friendships. Beginning university can be quite intimidating, and if you’re an incoming student reading this, it might also be one of your major concerns. On my initial day in student accommodations, just days before the term officially kicked off, I spent the whole day tucked away in my room, too frightened to venture out and introduce myself.
Fast forward to today, and I can proudly state that I’ve developed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, spanning both my course and the wider university community. It all began with casual conversations and connecting with those who were experiencing the same feelings as I.
So, what have I learned? Taking that initial step at the beginning of the year is essential. If you don’t feel ready or comfortable at first, that’s okay—there will be numerous ice-breakers and events aimed at helping you engage with others. Above all, be true to yourself. With such a varied group of individuals at university, you’re sure to discover those who align with your interests and values.
### Addressing the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was evident, and the transition from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. Being in a demanding academic setting can sometimes undermine your confidence, particularly when you see others studying and feeling as though you’re falling behind.
What aided me during these times was the realization that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, chances are others are too. The crucial step is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Learning to request support may be the most vital skill to cultivate during your first year.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
Speaking of support, I cannot stress enough how remarkable the staff in the Materials department are. They truly desire for students to thrive and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us, addressing our worries and providing guidance.
Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until late in the year, I wish I had sought it out sooner. At the year’s outset, I took a step by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to forge valuable relationships with staff members. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My recommendation? Make the most of the resources and support accessible—you can never have too much assistance.
### Insights Gained
This year has shown me that the apprehensions I felt prior to starting university—and even throughout it—were often unwarranted. With a wide array of support options available from both staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve learned how to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of joy and enjoyment.
Reflecting on this past year, I recognize a journey of personal growth, new friendships, and invaluable lessons. For anyone on the brink of starting their university adventure, remember: take the plunge, seek help, and, most importantly, be yourself.
