**Reflections on My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty as I geared up to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). As someone who has always been introverted, immersing myself in this new phase felt daunting. Now, reflecting on an academic year filled with personal development, trials, and abundant happiness, I can confidently affirm it has been a life-changing journey. But what insights have I gained, and how do I feel now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was forging friendships. For many incoming students, this is among the largest concerns regarding starting university, and I was no different. On my initial day in student accommodation, just days before the term commenced, I spent the entire day concealed in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself.

Fast forward to today, and I’m delighted to say I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had. These connections have evolved into my second family, both in my course and throughout the university. What changed? It all began with simple conversations. I recognized that others were also in a similar situation, and taking that step to reach out was the best choice I could have made.

So, what’s the takeaway? Make that move early on. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. And above all, just be yourself. With such a diverse cohort at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Adjusting to Academic Demands
Another major challenge was getting used to the workload and the heightened difficulty of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was evident, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It was not always easy to remain confident, especially when it appeared that others were grasping concepts more quickly than I was.

What aided me in overcoming this was the understanding that I wasn’t alone. Everyone was facing the same struggles, and if I found something perplexing, it was likely others did as well. The key insight? Don’t be afraid to seek assistance. Whether from your classmates or the faculty, asking for support is one of the most essential skills you can cultivate in your first year.

### The Significance of Supportive Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is remarkable. The instructors and tutors genuinely want their students to thrive, and they appreciate the difficulties we encounter. They are accessible, understanding, and keep open lines of communication throughout the year to address any issues.

Though I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had started earlier. Initially, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative, which helped me forge connections with faculty members. This proved invaluable. Whether through formal roles or informal chats, getting acquainted with the faculty is one of the best actions you can take for yourself. My suggestion? Make the most of the support systems available—you can never receive too much assistance!

### Insights Gained from My First Year
Looking back on this past year, I’ve come to realize that the anxiety I felt before beginning university—and even throughout the year—was often unwarranted. With ample support from both staff and peers, there’s always someone available to help.

This year has taught me that I’m never truly on my own. It has shown me how to manage the stress of exams and deadlines while also savoring moments of joy and enjoyment. Most importantly, it’s reminded me that growth frequently stems from venturing beyond your comfort zone.

As I gaze forward, I’m eager to continue this journey, equipped with the lessons and experiences from my first year. To anyone about to start university: welcome the challenges, take those chances, and remember to relish the experience.
