**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of beginning my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who used to be quite shy and introverted, plunging into this new phase felt intimidating. Reflecting on this now, I recognize an academic year filled with significant personal development, obstacles, and memorable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting aspects I encountered was forging friendships. The university experience can feel overwhelming, and if you’re an incoming student reading this, it might be a prevalent concern for you as well. On my initial day at student housing, just a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the entire day concealed in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself.
Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had. My fellow students and classmates have come to feel like a second family to me at Imperial. How did this transformation occur? It began with casual conversations and connecting with others who shared similar experiences.
The most valuable lesson I’ve learned is to take that leap of faith early on. Even if you don’t feel fully equipped, there will be numerous icebreaker events and opportunities to engage with others. Most importantly, just be authentic. With the diverse environment at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who align with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another considerable challenge was adapting to the increased workload and the heightened complexity of the course material. The leap from A-level studies to university was significant, and the transition from the first term to the second term felt even more strenuous. It’s common to feel inundated or question your capabilities when you notice your peers studying and appear to have everything under control.
What aided me was the recognition that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you find yourself grappling with something, it’s likely others are too. The essential part is to seek help—whether from fellow students or the academic staff. Developing the ability to seek assistance is arguably the most critical skill to nurture in your first year.
### The Necessity of Support and Community
On the topic of support, I cannot stress enough how remarkable the staff in the Materials department are. They genuinely prioritize students’ well-being and are always eager to assist. Throughout the year, they fostered open communication and exhibited empathy towards the challenges we encountered.
Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral assistance that was available until late in the year, I wish I had capitalized on it earlier. At the year’s beginning, I made the decision to become a year well-being representative. This role provided me with the opportunity to cultivate relationships with staff members, which has proven to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My key takeaway? Make the most of the support that is available to you—you can never have an excess of assistance!
### Insights Gained
Upon reflecting on my inaugural year, I’ve come to understand that the anxiety I felt prior to starting university—and even throughout the year—was largely unjustified. There’s a wealth of support accessible, whether from faculty or fellow peers. I’ve realized I’m never genuinely alone, and I’ve learned to strike a balance between enjoying myself and managing the unavoidable pressures of exams and deadlines.
This year has been a transformative adventure, and I’m eager to discover what lies ahead as I progress in my studies in Materials Science and Engineering.
