**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, trepidation, and doubts regarding the path ahead. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, jumping into this new chapter felt intimidating. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I see a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and memorable moments of happiness. So, what insights has this year provided me, and what is my current perspective?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendship
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered at the university’s outset was forming friendships. For many incoming students, this can be a major source of stress, and I was no different. On my first day at my student housing, just days prior to the start of classes, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet new people.
Looking back now, I can assert that I’ve made some of the closest friends I’ve ever known. These relationships have come to form my second family here at Imperial. It all commenced with small, simple interactions with others in similar situations.
What did I discover? Taking that leap at the year’s start is vital. Even if you don’t feel prepared or at ease, there will be numerous chances to engage with others, including ice-breaker activities and social events. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you will undoubtedly meet individuals who connect with you.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another substantial challenge was adjusting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university studies was palpable, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities when observing others who appear to be thriving.
What assisted me was the realization that everyone is facing similar difficulties. If you’re having trouble grasping something, it’s likely that others are too. The key lies in reaching out for help—whether from fellow students or faculty. Learning to seek assistance is probably the most beneficial skill you can cultivate during your first year.
### The Caring Staff
Speaking of support, the faculty in the Materials department are truly remarkable. They sincerely desire for students to succeed and exhibit empathy regarding the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open channels of communication, making sure our concerns were acknowledged and addressed.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until later in the academic year, I wish I had engaged with it sooner. One proactive step I took early on was becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to form connections with staff members, which proved invaluable. There are numerous ways to interact with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My primary takeaway? Make use of all the support provided—you can never receive too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
Upon reflection, this year has taught me that the apprehension I felt—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—was frequently unfounded. With the substantial support accessible from staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve learned how to navigate stress from exams and deadlines while also embracing moments of joy and enjoyment.
As I progress, I feel increasingly confident and equipped to tackle the upcoming challenges. My first year at Imperial has been a transformative journey, and I’m eager to see what lies ahead.
