**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overflowing with apprehension, anxiety, and doubt about what awaited me. I was on the verge of starting my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had typically been introverted and reserved, venturing into the unfamiliar was an intimidating challenge. Looking back now, I recognize a year that was life-changing—one rich with personal development, hurdles, and abundant enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand today?

### Overcoming the Challenge of Forming Connections

One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was creating friendships. Beginning university can feel overwhelming, and if you’re an incoming student reading this, it’s probably one of your concerns as well. On my inaugural day at student housing, a few days before the semester officially kicked off, I spent the whole day remaining in my room, too anxious to emerge and meet others.

Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced. The individuals I’ve encountered here—both in my program and throughout the university—have become my second family. It merely required a little bravery to engage in small discussions with others who were feeling just as I was.

What have I taken away from this situation? First, it’s beneficial to take that initial leap. Even if you don’t feel fully prepared, there will be numerous ice-breaker activities and chances to connect with others. Second, the most advantageous thing you can do is to be authentic. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you are sure to discover individuals who align with your interests and principles.

### Managing the Academic Shift

Another major challenge was getting accustomed to the volume of work and the complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was palpable, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more demanding. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities when you observe others studying and wonder if you’re doing sufficient work.

What aided me through this process was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar difficulties. If you’re finding it hard to grasp something, it’s likely that others are as well. The crucial thing is to reach out for assistance—whether from classmates or instructors. Learning to seek help is perhaps the most vital skill to cultivate during your first year.

### The Value of Supportive Faculty

On the topic of support, the faculty in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely desire for students to excel and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open with us, addressing our issues and providing direction.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support offered until later in the year, I regret not doing so earlier. Making that move significantly impacted my experience. At the beginning of the year, I took on the role of a well-being representative for my year, which allowed me to foster connections with faculty members. This turned out to be invaluable. Whether through formal responsibilities or casual conversations, developing a rapport with the faculty is one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself. My primary takeaway? Leverage the resources and assistance available to you—you can never have too much support.

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to realize that the anxiety I experienced—both prior to embarking on my university journey and throughout the year—was frequently unwarranted. An abundance of support exists, both from faculty and fellow students, to guide you through the obstacles.

This year has demonstrated to me that I’m never genuinely alone, and it has taught me how to effectively balance the pressures from exams and deadlines with moments of joy and connection. It’s been a year of significant growth, and I’m eager to discover what lies ahead.

By seizing the opportunities and support surrounding me, I’ve not only navigated my first year but have also flourished in ways I never anticipated.
