**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of beginning my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, stepping into this new phase felt like plunging into the abyss. Now, reflecting on the academic year that has passed, I recognize a time of tremendous personal development, challenges, and countless unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?

### Conquering the Fear of Making Connections

One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. If you’re a prospective student reading this, you may share those same jitters. On my first day in student accommodation, just a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too nervous to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can confidently say I’ve made some of the finest friends I’ve ever had.

The pivotal moment occurred when I chose to take a risk and strike up small talk with others who were experiencing similar feelings. Gradually, I discovered a second family here at Imperial, both within my course and outside of it. My most significant insight? Take that leap of faith at the beginning of the year. Even if you don’t feel prepared, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to engage with others. And, above all, be true to yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to meet those who connect with you.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another noteworthy challenge was acclimatizing to the demanding workload and the heightened complexity of the course content. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first to the second term was even more formidable. It’s all too easy to feel swamped or question your competence when observing others studying and seemingly thriving.

What assisted me in managing this was the acknowledgment that everyone is grappling with similar issues. If you encounter something confusing, it’s likely that others are too. The crucial step is to seek assistance—be it from your peers or the faculty. Learning to ask for help is arguably the most important skill you can cultivate during your initial year.

### Assistance from the Materials Department

On the topic of support, I cannot stress enough the remarkable nature of the staff in the Materials department. They deeply care about student success and are compassionate regarding the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, there was consistent communication between faculty and students to tackle any issues.

Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had tapped into that resource sooner. Early on, I made a bold move by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to forge strong ties with staff members, which turned out to be tremendously beneficial. There are numerous avenues to get acquainted with the staff, and I highly recommend seizing these chances. My main takeaway here is straightforward: don’t hesitate to leverage the resources available to you. You can never have too much help!

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on the year, I’ve learned that the anxiety I experienced—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—was often misplaced. A wealth of support exists, whether from staff or fellow students, to assist you in overcoming challenges. I’ve realized that I am never truly alone, and it’s feasible to find joy even in the midst of the pressures of exams and deadlines.

As I progress, I am thankful for the growth, relationships, and experiences that have shaped my first year. To anyone preparing to embark on their university journey: embrace the obstacles, rely on the support around you, and remember to enjoy the experience.
