**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was beset by nerves, anxiety, and uncertainty regarding what awaited me. I was on the brink of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been somewhat shy and reserved, stepping into the unknown felt like a daunting task. Now, reflecting on an academic year replete with growth, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment, I can appreciate the depth of what I’ve learned and the progress I’ve made.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends

One of the most daunting challenges I encountered at the outset of university was forming friendships. If you are a prospective student reading this, you may be experiencing similar feelings—it’s a widespread concern. On my first day at the student accommodation, right before term commenced, I spent the day in my room, too apprehensive to go out and introduce myself. Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had.

These friendships have evolved into my second family, both within my course and around the university. All it took was stepping outside my comfort zone and initiating small conversations with others who were equally concerned.

So, what did I discover? Take that bold step at the beginning of the year, even if you feel uneasy. Don’t stress if you’re not immediately prepared—there will be numerous icebreakers and gatherings to help you meet others. Most importantly, be yourself. With such a diverse environment at Imperial, you are sure to connect with individuals who share your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another major challenge was adapting to the heightened workload and the intricacies of the coursework. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more intense. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when observing others studying and perceiving them as being ahead.

What benefitted me greatly was understanding that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you struggle with a concept, it’s likely others do too. The fundamental lesson here is to ask for help—whether it’s from your classmates or the faculty. This is perhaps the most vital insight I gained during my first year: don’t shy away from seeking support.

### Fostering Relationships with Faculty

Speaking of support, the faculty in the Materials Science department are exceptional. They sincerely care about student success and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained an open line of communication with us, addressing our concerns and offering guidance.

Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until the year’s end, I wish I had leveraged it earlier. At the beginning of the year, I took a brave step by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to establish connections with faculty members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. Whether through formal roles or casual interactions, getting acquainted with the staff is one of the best decisions you can make for yourself.

My primary takeaway here? Make the most of the help and resources at your disposal. There is no such thing as excessive support.

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on this year, I’ve realized that the apprehension I felt—both before starting university and during my first term—was often unwarranted. With a wealth of assistance from both staff and fellow students, I was never truly on my own.

I’ve learned how to balance the stress from exams and deadlines with moments of enjoyment. Most importantly, I’ve gained confidence and embraced the opportunities that come from venturing beyond my comfort zone.

To anyone gearing up to begin their university experience: take the leap, seek assistance, and don’t forget to savor the journey.
