**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty as I prepared to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, entering an unfamiliar environment felt daunting. Now, reflecting on an academic year rich with growth, challenges, and unforgettable experiences, I recognize how transformative this journey has been. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most daunting parts of commencing university life was forming friendships. If you’re a prospective student reading this, you might share similar feelings. On my first day in student housing, just days before the term officially kicked off, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the most meaningful relationships I’ve ever had.
These connections didn’t materialize overnight—it began with light conversation and bonding with others who were just as apprehensive as I was. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, all starting from that initial brave step. My recommendation? Be courageous and take that plunge early on. If you’re not ready immediately, no worries—there will be plenty of icebreaker events and chances to interact with others. Above all, be authentic. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who align with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adapting to the academic challenges of university was yet another significant hurdle. The transition from A-levels to university-level coursework was marked, and the move from the first term to the second was even more profound. It’s natural to feel inundated or question your capabilities, particularly when you observe others studying and wonder if you’re keeping pace.
What supported me the most was an understanding that I wasn’t alone in my difficulties. If I found something confusing, it was likely that others did too. The essential thing is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or teaching staff. Learning how to ask for help is arguably the pivotal skill to cultivate in your first year.
### Assistance from Faculty
Speaking of support, the faculty in the Materials department have been outstanding. They sincerely wish for students to thrive and are understanding of the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication and were always prepared to address our concerns.
I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support offered until the year’s end, and I regret not reaching out sooner. Early in the year, I took a plunge by volunteering as a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to develop connections with staff members, which proved to be incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Make the most of the support systems at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
In hindsight, this year has imparted a wealth of knowledge. Those anxious feelings I experienced prior to embarking on my university adventure—and even throughout the year—were frequently unfounded. With extensive support provided by both staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I also discovered how to balance the pressures from exams and deadlines with elements of enjoyment and fun.
As I contemplate my first year, I’m thankful for the challenges I faced and the development they catalyzed. For anyone on the verge of beginning their own university path, remember that feeling anxious is perfectly normal. Embrace the possibilities, rely on the support surrounding you, and above all, savor the journey.
