**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I experienced a whirlwind of nerves, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what the future held. I was on the brink of starting my adventure as a freshman in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been rather shy and introverted, stepping into the unknown was a significant departure from my comfort zone. Now, as I reflect on an academic year filled with personal growth, challenges, and memorable experiences, I can assert that it was a life-changing journey. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. This is a common concern for many incoming students about starting their university journey—and I was no different. On my first day at the student residence, shortly before the term kicked off, I spent the entire day confined to my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet new people.
Fast forward to now, and I’m thrilled to declare that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had. At Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family—individuals who share my passions, uplift me, and enhance this experience immensely. It merely required a little small talk with others who were experiencing the same uncertainties.
What lesson did I derive from this? Taking that first step at the start of the year is essential. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret—numerous icebreaker events and networking opportunities are available. Most importantly, simply be yourself. With such a diverse environment at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter others who resonate with you.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was adapting to the demands of the coursework and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the leap from the first term to the second term was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when you observe peers studying and presume they’re outperforming you.
What aided me during this time was recognizing that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you’re struggling with a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The important thing is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. This may be the most crucial skill to cultivate in your first year.
### The Importance of Supportive Faculty
On the topic of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is exceptional. The lecturers and tutors genuinely care about student success and understand the various hurdles we encounter. They maintain accessible communication throughout the academic year and are ever willing to address our inquiries.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support services until late in the year, I wish I had engaged with them sooner. Accepting the position of year well-being representative early on was one of the pivotal choices I made, allowing me to create connections with faculty. This experience proved invaluable. There are numerous avenues available to connect with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Utilize the support accessible to you—there’s no such thing as too much help!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on the past year, I’ve come to realize that the anxiety I felt prior to starting university—and even throughout the year—was often unwarranted. Thanks to the extensive support available from both faculty and fellow students, I was never truly isolated. I’ve learned how to balance stress from exams and deadlines with joyous and enjoyable moments.
Ultimately, my inaugural year at Imperial has been a journey of self-exploration, development, and connection. If you’re about to embark on a similar adventure, bear in mind: take the initiative, seek help, and relish the experience. You may be pleasantly surprised by how far you can go.
