**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and doubts about what the future held. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, venturing into the unknown felt particularly challenging. Now, reflecting on a year filled with personal growth, hurdles, and memorable moments, I can appreciate how much I’ve gained and how far I’ve advanced.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most daunting parts of starting university was the thought of forming new friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you might share similar feelings. I certainly did. On my initial day in student housing, just before the term kicked off, I spent the whole day tucked away in my room, too anxious to emerge and introduce myself to anyone.

Fast forward to the present, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced. My friends here have become akin to family, and it all began with casual conversations and shared experiences. I’ve discovered that taking that first step—despite how intimidating it may seem—is truly worthwhile. If you’re not ready to jump in right away, that’s perfectly fine! Throughout the year, there are numerous ice-breaking activities and avenues to meet new people.

Most crucially, I’ve come to understand the importance of being authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who align with your passions and principles. So, take a breath, move beyond your comfort zone, and trust that you’ll find your tribe.

### Adjusting to the Academic Shift

Another major hurdle was adapting to the demands of the coursework and the complexity of the subjects. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or doubt your abilities when you observe others mastering the material more swiftly.

What aided me in navigating this transition was understanding that everyone shares similar struggles. If you’re having difficulty grasping something, it’s likely that your peers are facing the same challenges. The key is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or faculty. Cultivating the skill of asking for support is one of the most crucial abilities you can develop in your initial year.

### The Significance of Support

Speaking of assistance, the faculty in the Materials department are remarkable. They sincerely wish for students to thrive and are compassionate regarding the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open with us, addressing our worries and offering advice.

Even though I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support provided until later in the year, I regret not doing so earlier. One of the wisest choices I made was to serve as a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to build connections with staff and gain a deeper understanding of the resources accessible to students. Whether through formal positions or casual interactions, getting acquainted with the staff is indispensable. My most important takeaway? Make the most of the support available—you can never receive too much help.

### Insights Gained

As I reflect on my first year, I’ve come to realize that many of the anxieties I experienced—both prior to and during university—were unfounded. A vast array of support exists, from faculty to fellow students, and you’re never genuinely isolated in your challenges.

This year has taught me how to manage the stress of exams and deadlines while also relishing moments of happiness and enjoyment. It has highlighted the value of taking risks, asking for assistance, and embracing the opportunities that arise.

To anyone about to commence their university adventure: have faith in yourself, rely on the support around you, and remember that every obstacle is a chance for growth.
