**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and doubt about what awaited me. I was about to begin my experience as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Having always been introverted and reticent, immersing myself entirely was quite outside my comfort zone. Now, reflecting on an academic year filled with personal development, challenges, and unforgettable moments, I can truly appreciate how much I’ve grown and progressed.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most daunting elements of commencing university was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this could be a concern of yours as well. On my first day in student housing, just before classes started, I spent the entire day in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others.

Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the finest friendships of my life. These relationships have become like a second family to me, both in my program and throughout the university. What was pivotal for me? Taking that first step to interact with others, even when it felt intimidating.

If you’re not yet prepared to jump in headfirst, that’s completely fine. Institutions like Imperial provide numerous icebreakers and social activities to facilitate connection with peers. The key insight for me was to genuinely be myself. With such a varied student community, you are sure to encounter individuals who share your passions and principles.

### Addressing Academic Hurdles

Adapting to the academic demands and the increase in complexity from A-levels posed another significant challenge. The shift from the first term to the second term felt particularly steep. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your skills when you see fellow students studying and worry if you’re keeping pace.

What assisted me during this time was the acknowledgment that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you’re having difficulty grasping a topic, it’s likely that others are too. The most crucial lesson I learned in my first year was the importance of seeking help. Whether from fellow students or faculty, reaching out can truly make a difference.

### Assistance from Faculty

Speaking of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is genuinely outstanding. The lecturers and staff sincerely care about students’ success and understand the obstacles we confront. They foster open communication throughout the academic year, addressing student inquiries and offering support.

Although I didn’t fully engage with the support services until the conclusion of the year, I wish I had acted sooner. Stepping into the role of a well-being representative for my year was a bold move for me, but it proved to be one of my best decisions. It offered me the chance to build rapport with staff members, which has been immensely beneficial.

Numerous opportunities exist for connecting with staff, and I highly encourage taking advantage of them. Whether through roles like mine or simply attending office hours, nurturing these connections can greatly enrich your university experience.

### Insights Gained

Looking back on my first year, I’ve realized that much of the anxiety I experienced prior to and during university was unwarranted. With the extensive support available from faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone.

This year has instructed me on how to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with experiences of joy and fun. It has highlighted the importance of taking risks, asking for assistance, and embracing the journey as it unfolds.

To anyone getting ready to embark on their university journey: take a deep breath, remain true to yourself, and remember that support is always readily available.
