### Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering

*Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, fear, and uncertainty about what awaited me. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been somewhat introverted, stepping into the unfamiliar was well outside my comfort zone. Now, reflecting on an academic year filled with development, challenges, and countless unforgettable experiences, I can’t help but contemplate what I’ve gained and how much I’ve progressed.

#### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

A significant challenge I encountered at the outset of my university journey was the task of making friends. If you’re a potential student reading this, you may resonate with those feelings. On my first day moving into my accommodation, I spent the whole day hiding in my room, too daunted to go out and meet people. Flash forward to now, and I can confidently affirm that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced.

At Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family—individuals who relate to my experiences and stand by me through thick and thin. What led me to this point? Taking that crucial first step. Initiating conversations, even brief ones, with others in similar situations made a tremendous impact.

If you’re feeling apprehensive about socializing, fear not! There are numerous ice-breaker events and chances to connect with others. The most vital lesson I’ve learned is to simply be yourself. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter people who resonate with your personality.

#### Adjusting to the Academic Shift

Another considerable challenge was adapting to the new workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was marked, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s all too easy to feel swamped and question your abilities, especially when you observe others studying and seemingly thriving.

What aided me in navigating this was the acknowledgment that everyone is facing similar struggles. If you’re finding it hard to grasp a concept, chances are others are experiencing the same thing. The essential thing is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or the teaching staff. This became one of the most valuable competencies I developed throughout my first year.

#### The Value of Support

Speaking of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is exceptional. The lecturers and support staff genuinely care about student success and understand the hurdles we encounter. They maintain an open line of communication throughout the academic year and are always eager to assist.

Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, I regret not accessing it sooner. Volunteering as a year well-being representative was one of the early leaps I took, and it was a wonderful choice. It enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which proved invaluable.

If I could offer one piece of counsel, it would be to make the most of the support available to you. Whether it’s academic resources or pastoral assistance, you can never have too much help.

#### Insights Gained

Reflecting on this past year has been enlightening. The apprehension I felt before commencing university—and even throughout the year—was often unfounded. With a broad spectrum of support options provided by staff and fellow students, I was never entirely alone.

Furthermore, I learned how to juggle the stress from exams and deadlines alongside moments of joy and amusement. University is a period of self-discovery, and while it presents its obstacles, it is also a profoundly fulfilling experience.

To anyone preparing to kick off their own university journey: take the plunge, embrace the hardships, and don’t hesitate to seek help. You can do this!
