**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was forthcoming. I was set to embark on my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been introverted and hesitant, stepping into the unknown was quite daunting. Now, reflecting on an academic year filled with development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment, I realize how transformative this experience has been for me. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered at the onset of university was forming friendships. If you’re an upcoming student, this may rank among your top concerns as well. On my inaugural day in student housing, merely days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the deepest friendships of my life—friends who have become like family.
How did this transformation occur? It all commenced with small actions, such as starting conversations with individuals who were experiencing similar feelings. I discovered that taking early chances is essential. If you don’t feel prepared right away, don’t fret—there will be numerous ice-breaker events and chances to socialize. Most importantly, I realized that being authentic is the best strategy. With such a vibrant community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the intricacies of the course content. The transition from A-levels to university level was evident, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more intense. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when you observe others studying and worry about your pace.
What assisted me in managing this was recognizing that everyone is confronting similar trials. If you find yourself not comprehending something, it’s likely that others are facing the same struggles. The essential aspect is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or teaching staff. Learning to ask for help is probably the most crucial skill to cultivate in your first year.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
Speaking of assistance, the personnel in the Materials Science and Engineering department have been exceptional. They truly aspire for students to thrive and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication and consistently provided support.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until later in the year, I wish I had engaged with it sooner. One proactive step I took early on was becoming a Year Well-being Representative. This position enabled me to establish connections with staff members, which turned out to be invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My key takeaway? Make the most of the support systems at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
This year has instilled in me the understanding that the apprehension I felt prior to and during my university experience was frequently unwarranted. With the plethora of support options offered by both staff and peers, I was never genuinely isolated. I’ve learned to balance the pressures of exams and deadlines with moments of joy and enjoyment, and I’ve evolved immensely as an individual.
As I ponder my first year, I am thankful for the challenges, the friendships, and the opportunities for personal development. To anyone preparing to embark on a similar journey: take that leap, seek help, and most importantly, stay true to yourself.
