**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was engulfed in anxiety, trepidation, and ambiguity regarding what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been introverted and quiet, plunging into this new phase felt quite overwhelming. Now, as I reflect on an academic year brimming with development, obstacles, and abundant enjoyment, I can recognize how transformative this journey has been. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was the challenge of making friends. If you’re an incoming student, this might be a significant worry for you as well. On my initial day in student housing, mere days before term officially started, I felt so inundated that I spent the whole day cloistered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself.
Fast forward to now, and I can proudly proclaim that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I could have hoped for. These bonds have become akin to a second family for me, both within my program and throughout the university. All it took was a bit of bravery to initiate small chats with individuals experiencing the same level of uncertainty.
What did I take away from this? That first step is invariably worthwhile. Even if you’re not entirely ready initially, there will be ample icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Most crucially, simply be yourself. Given the rich diversity at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Transition
Another major challenge was adapting to the increased workload and complexity of the material. The shift from A-levels to university was stark, and the transition from the first term to the second term felt even more substantial. It’s simple to feel swamped or question your competencies when observing others studying and wondering if you’re measuring up.
What enabled me to navigate these moments of self-doubt was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you find yourself grappling with a concept, it’s likely that others are in the same predicament. The crucial factor is to reach out for assistance—whether it’s from peers or the teaching staff. This is arguably the most valuable lesson I learned in my first year: don’t shy away from seeking help.
### Supportive Faculty and Pastoral Assistance
On the subject of support, the faculty in the Materials department are phenomenal. They truly desire for students to thrive and exhibit immense empathy towards the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained transparent communication with us, addressing our worries and dispensing guidance.
Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had connected with them earlier. Early on, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative, which facilitated relationship-building with faculty members. This proved to be an invaluable opportunity. Whether through formal responsibilities or casual discussions, developing rapport with the staff is among the most beneficial actions you can take for your own development. My key takeaway? Make the most of the support at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
As I reflect on this year, I’ve come to understand that a lot of the anxiety I felt before and throughout the year was largely unwarranted. With the extensive support available from both faculty and fellow students, there’s always someone to turn to. I’ve learned that I’m never genuinely alone, and I’ve figured out how to harmonize enjoying my time with coping with the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
This year has been a journey of self-discovery, and I am thankful for the trials and victories that have shaped me along the path.
