**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted and reserved, immersing myself in this new environment was a considerable stretch from my comfort zone. Now, as I reflect on a year teeming with personal growth, obstacles, and a significant amount of enjoyment, I can assert with confidence that it’s been a life-changing journey. But what insights have I gained this year, and where do I currently find myself?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered at the beginning of university was forging friendships. If you’re a prospective student, that might be one of your principal concerns as well. On my moving-in day, just a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to the present, and I am delighted to say that I’ve established some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever known—friends who have become like a second family.
How did this transformation occur? It all initiated with casual conversations and bonding with peers who were experiencing similar feelings. The most significant takeaway for me was that taking the initiative at the beginning of the year is invariably rewarding. If you’re still finding your footing or feeling uneasy, don’t fret—there are ample ice-breaking events and chances to connect with others. Above all, just be yourself. With such a vibrant community at Imperial, you will surely encounter individuals who align with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Shift in Academic Demands
Another considerable challenge was adapting to the heightened workload and complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from the first semester to the second felt even more daunting. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or to question your capabilities, particularly when observing others studying and seeming to have it all figured out.
What aided me in managing this change was recognizing that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you find yourself perplexed about a concept, there’s a good chance others are too. The essential thing is to reach out for assistance—whether it’s from fellow students or teaching staff. Learning to seek help is arguably the most crucial skill to cultivate during your first year.
### Assistance from Faculty
Regarding faculty, the Materials Science department at Imperial is exceptional. The instructors and tutors sincerely wish for students to thrive and are understanding of the obstacles we encounter. They maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the year and are always eager to address our issues.
I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral care available until late in the year, but I now wish I had sought it sooner. One of the steps I took early on was becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to foster connections with faculty members, which proved to be tremendously beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My key lesson? Utilize the support accessible to you—you can never have an excess of help!
### Insights Gained
In hindsight, this year has imparted to me that much of the anxiety I experienced—both prior to and during university—was often unwarranted. With the extensive support available from faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve developed strategies to juggle the pressure from exams and deadlines alongside moments of happiness and enjoyment.
Ultimately, my initial year at Imperial has been a journey of self-discovery, resilience, and connection. If you’re preparing to embark on a similar path, understand that challenges are inevitable, but so too are avenues for growth and support. Embrace the adventure, be authentic, and don’t shy away from asking for assistance—you’ll be astonished at how much you can achieve.
