**Musings on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overcome with anxiety, trepidation, and doubts about what awaited me. I was about to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been introverted, plunging into the unfamiliar felt like a formidable challenge. Reflecting now, I recognize a year filled with personal growth, obstacles, and ample enjoyment. But what insights have I gained from this journey, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered at the outset of university was the challenge of forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you may share the same feelings—it’s a typical concern. On my first day at student accommodation, just before the term commenced, I spent the entire time secluded in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself.

Fast forward to now, and I can confidently state that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, and it all initiated with casual conversations and connecting with others who were navigating similar situations.

What did I glean from this? Taking that initial step of faith is essential. If you’re not quite ready at the start, that’s perfectly fine—there will be numerous informal events and encounters to connect with others. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a varied mix of individuals throughout the university, you’re sure to meet those who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Facing the Academic Hurdles

Adapting to the demands and complexities of university-level coursework posed another challenge. The shift from A-levels to university was substantial, and the transition from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s all too easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when observing others studying and excelling.

What assisted me in navigating this was the awareness that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re having trouble comprehending something, there’s a good chance others are as well. The essential point is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or teaching staff. This is arguably the most vital lesson I learned in my first year: never shy away from requesting support.

### The Importance of Supportive Staff

Speaking of assistance, the personnel within the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely care about ensuring students thrive and are understanding of the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open and were ever ready to address our inquiries.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had accessed it sooner. At the beginning of the year, I made a bold move by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to cultivate connections with staff members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are various ways to engage with staff, and forging those connections can significantly enhance your university experience.

My lesson learned? Utilize the resources and support at your disposal. You can never have too much assistance, and it’s available for a purpose.

### Takeaways

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to realize that the anxiety I felt—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—was often unwarranted. With the extensive array of support systems accessible from both staff and peers, I was never genuinely alone.

This year has imparted valuable lessons on balancing the pressures of examinations and deadlines with enjoyable periods of fun. It has been a path of self-exploration, development, and learning to welcome challenges.

To anyone about to embark on their university adventure: take the plunge, seek help, and have faith that you’ll discover your niche.
