**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Around ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the verge of commencing my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and cautious, plunging into this new phase felt intimidating. Looking back, I now see a year filled with development, challenges, and lots of enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?
### Conquering the Fear of Friendship
One of the most daunting parts of starting university was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, it’s probably something that’s concerning you as well. On my first day in student housing, just days ahead of the semester starting, I spent the entirety of the day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to go out and meet others. Fast forward to today, and I proudly declare that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced—friends who feel like an extended family.
How did that evolve? It all began with casual conversations and connecting with people facing similar situations. The main takeaway? Take a chance at the start of the year. If you aren’t fully ready, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to socialize. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a vibrant community at Imperial, you’re certain to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Addressing Academic Difficulties
Adjusting to the workload and the complexity of the coursework was another major challenge. The leap from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities, particularly when witnessing others study and wondering if you measure up.
What assisted me during these challenging times was the understanding that everyone shares this journey. If you’re having trouble grasping a concept, it’s likely that others are experiencing the same issue. The most important lesson from my first year was the importance of seeking assistance—whether from peers or faculty. Don’t shy away from requesting support; it can truly make a difference.
### The Value of Supportive Faculty
Speaking of assistance, the staff within the Materials department are remarkable. They sincerely care about student success and understand the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they fostered open communication with us, addressing our worries and providing guidance.
Although I didn’t completely take advantage of the available pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had done so earlier. Stepping into the role of year well-being representative was one of the chances I seized at the beginning of the year, and it emerged as a fulfilling experience. It allowed me to cultivate connections with staff, which has proven invaluable. Whether through formal responsibilities or informal exchanges, getting to know the faculty is one of the finest actions you can take for yourself. My suggestion? Utilize the resources and support structures available—you can never have too much assistance.
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on the past year, I’ve realized that the anxiety I felt—both prior to and throughout university—was often unjustified. With the abundant support from staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve learned to navigate the stress of exams and deadlines while also embracing moments of happiness and fun.
Beginning university is an immense milestone, but it’s also a chance for growth, relationships, and exploration. If you’re about to start this adventure, embrace the trials and take those leaps of confidence. You might just astonish yourself with how far you are capable of going.
