**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what awaited me. As a first-year student about to begin my journey in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link), it felt like I was plunging into the unknown—an experience my previously shy and reserved self was not familiar with. Now, as I reflect on this academic year, I recognize a time of significant personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Fear of Forming Friendships
One of the biggest obstacles I encountered was making friends. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you might feel similarly. On my first day settling into my accommodation, just days before the term officially commenced, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too daunted to step outside and meet new people. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life—friends who feel like an extended family here at Imperial.

What made the difference? It began with simple conversations. I came to realize that everyone else was in the same situation, and taking that initial step to connect with others made all the difference. My recommendation? Make that initial move at the beginning of the year. If you’re hesitant or uncomfortable, don’t stress—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to engage with others. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with you.

### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the leap from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s common to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities, especially when you observe others studying and wonder if you measure up.

What aided me in overcoming this challenge was the realization that everyone is undergoing similar experiences. If you don’t grasp a concept, it’s likely that others may not either. The essential approach is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or teaching staff. Developing the ability to ask for help is arguably the most crucial skill you can cultivate during your initial year.

### Assistance from the Materials Department
Speaking of the staff, the support within the Materials department has been remarkable. The lecturers and tutors genuinely care about student success and understand the challenges we encounter. They keep lines of communication open throughout the year and are always willing to respond to our queries.

Even though I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had accessed it sooner. Stepping into the role of a year well-being representative at the beginning was a decision I took, and it turned out to be one of the most rewarding choices I made. It enabled me to build rapport with staff members, which proved to be invaluable. Whether through formal titles or casual interactions, establishing relationships with the staff is one of the best actions you can take for your personal growth. My key takeaway? Fully utilize the support systems at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained
Looking back on this year, I’ve come to understand that the anxiety I experienced—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—was often unnecessary. With the abundance of support from staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. This year has shown me how to balance the stress from exams and deadlines with moments of joy and companionship.

In conclusion, my initial year at Imperial has been a transformative journey. It has been a path of growth, resilience, and exploration, and I eagerly anticipate what lies ahead.
