**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was coming. I was about to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been shy and introverted, stepping into the unfamiliar felt daunting. Now, reflecting on an academic year rich with growth, challenges, and memorable moments, I can affirm it has been a life-changing experience. So, what insights have I gained, and where am I today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting parts of starting university was forming friendships. If you’re an aspiring student reading this, it’s likely a concern for you as well. On my first day in student housing, I spent the whole day in my room, too anxious to go out and introduce myself. Looking back now, I’m thrilled to say I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life—friends who now feel like family.
How did I reach this point? By taking that initial step. It began with brief conversations with others who were just as apprehensive as me. If you’re feeling unsure, don’t fret—there will be plenty of icebreaker activities and chances to meet others. The essential lesson I learned is to be authentic. With such a vibrant community at Imperial, you’re sure to find people you connect with.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major hurdle was adapting to the course workload and the complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more significant. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or question your skills when you observe others seemingly excelling.
What helped me during those times was the understanding that everyone faces similar challenges. If you’re wrestling with a topic, chances are others are too. The most vital skill I acquired in my first year was learning to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
Speaking of faculty, the Materials Science department at Imperial is exceptional. The lecturers and support staff genuinely care about student success and understand the challenges we encounter. They foster open communication throughout the year and are always eager to assist.
Though I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I could have utilized it sooner. At the beginning, I took a proactive step by becoming a well-being representative for the year, which helped me forge connections with staff members. This turned out to be an invaluable experience. Whether through formal positions or informal chats, getting to know the staff is one of the best decisions you can make for yourself. My key takeaway? Utilize the support available to you—there’s no such thing as too much help.
### Experiences Gained and Future Aspirations
This year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced prior to and during the university was often misplaced. With the abundant support from both staff and peers, I was never truly alone. I’ve learned to manage stressors like exams and deadlines while also embracing moments of joy and satisfaction.
As I contemplate my first year, I’m thankful for the personal growth, the friendships I’ve established, and the insights I’ve gathered. If you’re preparing to embark on your own university journey, understand that it’s completely normal to feel anxious. Embrace the obstacles, take the plunge, and have faith that you’ll carve your own path.
