**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the road ahead. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, plunging into this new phase felt daunting. Now, reflecting on a year filled with development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment, I can assert that it has been a life-changing experience. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. If you are an incoming student, this might be among your greatest concerns as well. On the first day of moving into my accommodation, just a few days ahead of the term’s start, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to go outside and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly declare that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships of my life—friends who feel like family.
How did this transform? It began with small efforts, such as engaging in light chatter with others who were just as anxious as I was. I learned that taking an early leap of faith is essential. If you’re not prepared to jump in right away, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to engage with others. Most importantly, I discovered that being true to yourself is the best strategy. With the incredibly diverse community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who align with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the heightened difficulty of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more formidable. It’s easy to become overwhelmed and doubt your capabilities when witnessing others studying and seemingly thriving.
What assisted me in handling this was the realization that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you find something difficult to grasp, it’s likely that others are too. The crucial step is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or teaching staff. This is perhaps the most significant lesson I took away in my first year: don’t hesitate to ask for help.
### The Value of Supportive Faculty
Speaking of assistance, the faculty in the Materials department are exceptional. They truly want students to flourish and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained transparent communication with us, addressing our worries and providing guidance.
Although I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support available until late in the year, I wish I had engaged with it earlier. Early on, I took the initiative to become a year well-being representative, which helped me establish solid connections with faculty members. This was an invaluable experience, and I urge others to seize similar opportunities. Whether through formal positions or informal conversations, connecting with the staff can significantly impact your journey. My greatest takeaway? Never hesitate to utilize the resources and support systems at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
This year has educated me that the apprehension I felt before entering university—and even throughout the year—was often misplaced. Numerous support systems exist, from staff to fellow students, to help you face the challenges ahead. I’ve learned that I am never truly alone and that it is feasible to harmonize academic demands with enjoyable moments.
In retrospect, I recognize how much I’ve evolved, both personally and academically. Entering university may seem like a leap into uncertainty, but with the right mindset and support, it can be an immensely rewarding experience.
