**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the path ahead. I was about to start my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, stepping into the unfamiliar was quite intimidating. Reflecting on the year now, I recognize it was a time filled with personal growth, challenges, and a lot of enjoyable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current state?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most daunting hurdles I encountered was forming friendships. Beginning university can feel quite overwhelming, and if you’re a future student reading this, it might be a significant concern for you as well. On my first day in student housing, just days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too anxious to go out and introduce myself.

Now, looking at my present situation, I can proudly state that I’ve made some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced. The individuals I’ve connected with here have turned into my second family, both in my program and within the larger university community. All it required was for me to step outside my comfort zone and initiate brief conversations with fellow students who were feeling just as hesitant as I was.

What is the lesson here? Taking that initial step at the beginning of the academic year is beneficial. If you aren’t quite ready or comfortable, don’t fret—there are numerous icebreaker events and chances to engage with others. Most importantly, be authentic. In such a diverse environment at Imperial, you’re sure to find people who resonate with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel daunted or question your abilities when you see classmates studying and appearing to thrive.

What assisted me in overcoming this was understanding that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something isn’t clear to you, it’s likely that others share the same confusion. The crucial point is to reach out for assistance—be it from peers or instructors. Learning to ask for help is arguably the most vital skill to cultivate during your first year.

### Assistance from the Materials Department

Speaking of assistance, the team in the Materials department is exceptional. They sincerely wish for students to succeed and are sympathetic to the obstacles we encounter. Over the course of the year, they kept the lines of communication open, addressing our queries and providing guidance.

I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had started sooner. In the beginning, I decided to take a risk and became a well-being representative for my year. This position allowed me to foster connections with staff members, which turned out to be invaluable. There are various ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Make the most of the support that’s available—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

This year has shown me that much of the anxiety I experienced prior to starting university, and even through the year, was largely unfounded. There are numerous support networks in place, from faculty to fellow students, ready to assist you with challenges. I’ve realized that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve learned how to enjoy my university life while also managing the unavoidable pressures of exams and deadlines.

Looking back, I’m proud of the progress I’ve made. Although beginning university may seem like a plunge into uncertainty, it’s equally a chance for personal growth, connection, and self-exploration.
