**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I began a journey that was both thrilling and daunting: pursuing my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a first-year student at Imperial College London. As someone who tends to be shy and reserved, immersing myself in the vibrant university atmosphere felt challenging. Reflecting on this past year, I recognize it as a period of personal development, obstacles, and unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I currently find myself?
### Conquering the Fear of Forming Friendships
One of the primary challenges I encountered when starting university was the task of making friends. For numerous incoming students, this can be among the most anxiety-inducing elements of university life. On my inaugural day in student accommodation, I found myself retreating to my room for hours, too apprehensive to step out and greet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly declare that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had.
The secret? Taking that first step. It began with light conversation and connecting with others who shared similar experiences. As time passed, these brief exchanges grew into significant friendships. My recommendation to newcomers is to seize the chances to meet new individuals, be it through icebreaker activities or spontaneous chats. And above all, remain true to yourself. With such a diverse group at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter people who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adapting to the academic challenges of university was another major obstacle. The transition from A-level studies to university-level coursework was stark, with the leap from the first term to the second being even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when confronted with complex material, especially when it appears that everyone else has a handle on things.
What assisted me immensely was the realization that I wasn’t alone. Chances are, if you find a concept difficult, others are as well. Seeking assistance—whether from classmates or faculty—became an essential skill for me during my first year. It’s not indicative of weakness, but rather a step towards comprehension and progress.
### The Supportive Materials Department
A remarkable aspect of my journey has been the exceptional support from the Materials Science and Engineering faculty. They sincerely want students to succeed and are always accessible for addressing concerns. Their understanding and open communication significantly enhanced my experience throughout the year.
Although I didn’t fully tap into the available pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. Becoming a year well-being representative allowed me to interact with staff members more intimately, which turned out to be an invaluable experience. Whether through structured roles or informal interactions, forming connections with your lecturers and support staff is one of the best things you can do for yourself. Don’t hesitate to utilize the resources and assistance available—they exist for a purpose!
### Insights Gained
Looking back on my first year, I’ve come to realize that the apprehension I felt before and during the university was largely unfounded. With the abundant support from both faculty and peers, I was never genuinely alone. This year has taught me how to navigate the stress of exams and deadlines while still savoring moments of joy and happiness.
In conclusion, my first year at Imperial has been a life-changing journey. It has illustrated the significance of stepping beyond my comfort zone, seeking help when required, and embracing the opportunities that arise. If you are on the brink of beginning your own university adventure, remember that it’s perfectly normal to feel anxious—but also understand that you are capable of thriving in this new chapter of your life.
