**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed by anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the journey that awaited me. I was on the brink of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted, plunging into the unknown was far outside my comfort zone. Now, reflecting on an academic year filled with personal growth, obstacles, and happiness, I can contemplate what I’ve absorbed and where I currently stand.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was the task of forming friendships. Beginning university can feel overwhelming, and if you’re an incoming student reading this, chances are this is a concern for you as well. On my initial day in student accommodation, just days before the term officially started, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others.
Fast forward to the present, and I can confidently claim to have established some of the best friendships of my life. Here at Imperial, and within my program, I’ve discovered a second family. It all began with small steps—engaging in casual conversations with others who were equally new and uncertain as I was.
What did I take away from this? Making that initial move at the start of the year is vital. If you’re not prepared or don’t feel comfortable at first, that’s completely fine! There will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to engage with fellow students. Most importantly, I found that being authentic is the optimal strategy. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’ll undoubtedly connect with individuals who align with you.
### Addressing the Academic Shift
Adapting to the academic expectations of university was another considerable challenge. The transition from A-levels to university-level studies was apparent, and the shift from the first to second term felt even more demanding. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities when observing others studying and apparently thriving.
What aided me in overcoming this was the understanding that everyone is navigating similar struggles. If you don’t grasp something, it’s likely others share that feeling. The essential action is to request assistance—whether from peers or staff members. Learning to seek help is arguably the most crucial skill you can cultivate during your first year.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
A remarkable aspect of my experience has been the exceptional support from the Materials department personnel. They sincerely wish for students to succeed and demonstrate understanding regarding the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained transparent communication with us and were proactive in addressing our issues.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support offered until the year’s end, I wish I had started earlier. Assuming the role of a well-being representative early on proved to be an enriching experience, allowing me to forge strong connections with staff members, which became invaluable. There are various ways to engage with staff, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My advice? Utilize the support and resources available—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on this year, I’ve learned that much of the anxiety I felt before and during university was frequently unwarranted. With extensive support from both staff and fellow students, it became clear that I was never truly isolated. I also learned to balance pressures like exams and deadlines with moments of joy and enjoyment.
In conclusion, my first year at Imperial has been a journey marked by growth, resilience, and discovery. If you’re about to embark on a similar journey, remember to take that leap, seek help, and embrace the opportunities that come your way. You may just astonish yourself with how far you can advance.
