**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was about to begin my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been introverted, stepping into the unknown seemed intimidating. Now, as I reflect on an academic year that was rich with growth, obstacles, and unforgettable experiences, I can appreciate how much I’ve developed and what I’ve achieved.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting parts of beginning university was the prospect of making friends. If you’re a prospective student reading this, it’s probably something you’re concerned about as well. I recall my first day in student housing, just days before the term officially started. I spent the whole day locked away in my room, too fearful to venture out and introduce myself to anyone.

Now, looking back, I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced. The individuals I’ve encountered here have become like a second family to me. All it required was venturing out of my comfort zone and initiating casual conversations with others who were feeling just as apprehensive.

What did I take away from this? Taking that initial leap of faith at the beginning of the year is worthwhile. If you’re not ready immediately, there’s no need to stress—numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet others will come your way. Above all, just stay true to yourself. With such a diverse group of people at university, you’re sure to find individuals who share your interests and values.

### Facing Academic Obstacles

Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the intricacies of the course content. The transition from A-levels to university was striking, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more daunting. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or to question your capabilities when you observe others studying and apparently thriving.

What aided me in navigating this was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re unsure about something, it’s likely that others are too. The key is to seek assistance. Whether from fellow students or faculty members, reaching out for help is one of the most essential skills you can cultivate in your first year.

### The Role of Supportive Faculty

Regarding support, the staff in the Materials department have been outstanding. They genuinely wish for students to flourish and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open with us and offered various types of assistance.

While I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support services until later in the year, I wish I had engaged sooner. One of my best decisions was to become a well-being representative for my year. This position allowed me to forge connections with staff members, which proved extremely valuable. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My key takeaway? Utilize the help and resources available to you—having support is always beneficial.

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on this year, I’ve learned that the anxiety I felt before starting university—and even throughout the year—was mostly unfounded. With the ample support offered by both staff and fellow students, I was never truly isolated.

I’ve come to embrace challenges, to reach out for help when necessary, and to find a balance between stress and enjoyment. University represents more than just academics—it’s a journey of personal growth, self-exploration, and forming lasting connections.

If you’re about to commence your own university journey, understand that feeling nervous is perfectly acceptable. But also recognize that you will find your rhythm, forge wonderful friendships, and develop in ways you never anticipated.
