**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, anxiety, and uncertainty about the future. I was about to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been quiet and introverted, jumping into this new experience felt intimidating. Reflecting now, I recognize a year rich with personal development, obstacles, and memorable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. Entering university can feel overwhelming, and if you’re an incoming student reading this, it’s probably one of your biggest worries. On my initial day in student housing, just a few days prior to the term starting, I spent the whole day confined to my room, too anxious to venture out and meet anyone.
Fast forward to now, and I can proudly assert that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships of my life. The individuals I’ve met here—both within my course and throughout the university—have become like a second family to me. It began with simple conversations and the realization that everyone else was similarly seeking connection.
So, what have I discovered? Take that early leap of faith. Even if you’re feeling uneasy or uncomfortable, there are numerous ice-breaking events and chances to socialize. Most importantly, just be true to yourself. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re likely to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Addressing Academic Hurdles
Adapting to the academic workload and rigor was another major challenge. The leap from A-levels to university was evident, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities when surrounded by high-achieving classmates.
What aided me in navigating this experience was realizing that everyone else was grappling with similar issues. If I didn’t grasp something, it was likely that others were in the same boat. The crucial lesson was learning to ask for assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. This has been perhaps the most significant lesson I’ve gleaned in my first year: don’t hesitate to seek support.
### The Significance of Helpful Staff
Speaking of support, the personnel in the Materials department have been remarkable. They truly want students to thrive and empathize with our challenges. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication with us, addressing our worries and providing direction.
I didn’t make the most of the pastoral support available until late in the year, and I wish I had utilized it earlier. At the beginning of the year, I took a risk by becoming a year well-being representative. This role helped me cultivate relationships with staff members, which was invaluable. There are many opportunities to connect with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My foremost takeaway? Leverage the resources and assistance available to you—you can never have too much support!
### Insights Gained
Looking back over this year, I’ve come to understand that many of the anxieties I had—both prior to and during my university experience—were unfounded. With the extensive support options from staff and peers, I was never truly alone. This year has taught me how to manage exam stress and deadlines while also enjoying moments of joy and fun.
If I could provide one piece of advice to incoming students, it would be this: embrace the difficulties, take those leaps of faith, and don’t hesitate to reach out for help. University is a period of growth, and with the right attitude and support, you’ll emerge stronger on the other side.
