**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about the future. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For an individual who had always been quiet and introverted, venturing into this new phase felt like plunging into the unknown. Now, as I reflect on an academic year brimming with personal growth, challenges, and unforgettable experiences, I can contemplate what I’ve gained and how much I’ve evolved.
### Confronting the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most intimidating hurdles I confronted was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may be a concern for you as well. On my initial day in university housing, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too afraid to emerge and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can enthusiastically affirm that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced.
The pivotal moment was taking that initial step—initiating brief conversations with fellow students who were experiencing the same nerves as me. Gradually, these exchanges developed into friendships that now feel akin to a second family. My recommendation? Be authentic. With such a vibrant community at Imperial, you’re bound to connect with individuals who resonate with your interests and principles. And if you’re hesitant to jump in right away, that’s perfectly fine—there are numerous icebreaker activities and chances to engage with others throughout the year.
### Confronting Academic Obstacles
Adapting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of university-level material was yet another substantial barrier. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and moving from the first to the second term felt even more challenging. It’s easy to feel daunted or question your capabilities when observing others who seem to be excelling effortlessly.
What assisted me was coming to the realization that I was not alone. Everyone was navigating the same journey, and if I found something challenging, chances were that others were too. The key lesson I learned was to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Asking for help is not indicative of weakness; it’s an essential skill for maneuvering through university life.
### Guidance from Faculty
In terms of support, the staff within the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely desire for students to succeed and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept the lines of communication open with us, addressing our feedback and offering assistance.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until the year’s end, I wish I had reached out earlier. Stepping into the role of a year well-being representative was among the best choices I made. It enabled me to foster connections with faculty members, which turned out to be invaluable. Whether through formal positions or informal encounters, building rapport with your lecturers and tutors can greatly impact your experience. My largest takeaway? Utilize the resources and support networks available—you can never have too much assistance.
### Valuable Takeaways
Reflecting back, this year has taught me that the anxiety I felt before and during university was often unwarranted. With the backing of faculty and fellow students, I was able to conquer my fears and flourish. I’ve realized that I’m never completely alone and that it’s feasible to manage the stress from exams and deadlines while still enjoying moments of happiness and excitement.
As I prepare for what’s next, I eagerly anticipate the following chapter. To anyone about to commence their own university adventure: take that plunge, welcome the challenges, and remember to rely on the support available to you. You can do it!
