**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, dread, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the brink of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had frequently been introverted and quiet, plunging into such an unfamiliar and demanding setting was intimidating. Now, as I contemplate the past academic year, I recognize a transformative experience characterized by personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current state?

### Breaking the Barrier of Friend-Making
One of the most significant obstacles I encountered at the outset of university was forging friendships. This is a common concern for many newcomers, and I was no different. On my first day at the student accommodation, mere days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, and I can assert with confidence that I have formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced.

The crucial element was making that first courageous step—initiating brief conversations with individuals who were experiencing similar feelings. Gradually, I discovered a second family here at Imperial, both within my program and throughout the campus. My most significant lesson? Stay true to yourself. With such a varied community of students, you’re likely to encounter others who have similar interests and values. And if you’re not ready to jump in right away, fret not—there are numerous icebreaker activities and chances to meet new people throughout the year.

### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was acclimatizing to the heightened workload and the intricacies of the course content. The leap from A-levels to university was apparent, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more intense. It’s easy to feel inundated or doubt your capabilities when you observe others appearing to flourish.

What aided me the most was realizing that everyone is sharing the same experiences. If you find something baffling, it’s likely others are grappling with it too. The best course of action is to ask for assistance—whether from your classmates or the faculty. Learning to seek help is arguably one of the most critical skills to cultivate in your first year.

### Assistance from Faculty and Well-Being Support
On the topic of support, the faculty in the Materials department has been fantastic. They genuinely care about students’ success and are understanding of the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication, addressing our concerns and providing guidance.

Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral care services until late in the year, I wish I had done so earlier. Assuming the role of a year well-being representative was one of the bold moves I made early on, and it turned out to be a fulfilling experience. It allowed me to forge connections with faculty members, which became incredibly valuable. My suggestion? Utilize the support systems available to you. Whether it’s for academic or personal matters, there’s no such thing as too much support.

### Insights Gained
Reflecting on the year, I’ve realized that the apprehension I felt—both before beginning university and during my first term—was largely unfounded. There are abundant resources and support networks available, from faculty to fellow students, which ensure you’re never genuinely alone.

Most crucially, I’ve discovered how to balance the demands of examinations and deadlines with enjoying university life. It’s been a transformative year, and I eagerly anticipate what lies ahead.

For anyone gearing up to commence their own university journey, keep this in mind: take that leap of faith, be authentic, and don’t hesitate to seek assistance. You’ve got this!
