**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty about what the future held. I was on the brink of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been quite introverted, plunging into this new phase felt intimidating. Now, as I reflect on an academic year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a good dose of enjoyment, I can’t help but ponder the insights I’ve gained and the distance I’ve traveled.

### Confronting the Challenge of Making Connections

Making friends was one of the most daunting elements of beginning university. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you may share similar feelings. On my first day in the student residence, I spent the entire day cocooned in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. But fast forward to the present, and I can proudly say that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced.

What changed? Taking that initial step to engage in casual conversations with those experiencing the same uncertainties as me. Gradually, I discovered a second family here at Imperial, all beginning with the simplest of dialogues. My suggestion? Don’t hesitate to make that move early in the year. If you’re not ready immediately, that’s perfectly fine—there will be ample icebreaker events and chances to connect with peers. Above all, be true to yourself. With a diverse array of individuals at Imperial, you’re sure to find others who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Transitioning to the workload and academic standards was another major obstacle. The leap from A-levels to university-level content was significant, and the second term brought even more intensity. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities when witnessing others studying and apparently thriving.

What propelled me forward was understanding that everyone experiences similar challenges. If you find a concept difficult, rest assured others likely do as well. The essential lesson is to reach out for assistance—whether from fellow students or faculty members. Learning to seek help may be one of the most crucial skills you can cultivate in your first year.

### Support from the Materials Department

A highlight of my experience has been the amazing support from the staff in the Materials department. They sincerely wish for students to thrive and are sympathetic to the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept the lines of communication open, responding to our concerns and providing valuable guidance.

Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support offered until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. Early on, I took a step forward by becoming a year well-being representative, which enabled me to connect with staff members. This proved to be an invaluable experience. Whether through formal roles or informal interactions, forming relationships with the staff is one of the best things you can do for yourself. My most significant takeaway? Make the most of the resources and support available—you can never have enough help.

### Insights Gained

Looking back, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt prior to starting university—and even throughout the year—was often misplaced. With the abundance of support from both faculty and fellow students, I was never truly alone. I’ve mastered the art of juggling exam-related stress and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment, and my self-confidence has grown along the way.

To anyone gearing up for their first year: embrace the challenges, take those brave leaps, and remember that assistance is always available. University is a time for growth, and with the right attitude, it can become one of the most fulfilling experiences of your life.
