**Insights from My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was about to begin my journey as a freshman in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been timid and introverted, stepping into the unknown felt daunting. Reflecting on my first year now, I recognize a time of tremendous personal growth, obstacles, and lots of enjoyable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and where am I at this point?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting parts of starting university was the fear of making connections. If you’re a prospective student reading this, you may be experiencing similar feelings. I certainly was. On my first day at the student dorms, just before the semester kicked off, I spent an entire day retreating to my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had.

These bonds didn’t develop instantly, but they began with small interactions—like engaging in light conversations with peers who felt just as apprehensive as I did. Gradually, I discovered a second family here at Imperial, both within my program and across the entire campus. My key takeaway? Take a chance at the beginning of the year. Even if you’re hesitant, there will be numerous ice-breaker events and opportunities to meet others. Most importantly, be authentic. With such a diverse group at Imperial, you’re sure to meet people who resonate with your interests and values.

### Addressing the Academic Obstacles
Adapting to the academic demands and the complexity of the subject matter was another major challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was striking, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel swamped or doubt your capabilities when you observe others studying and apparently thriving.

What aided me through this was understanding that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you’re finding something tough to grasp, there’s a good chance others are, too. The essential step is to seek assistance—whether from your peers or the academic staff. This is arguably the most crucial skill to cultivate in your first year.

### The Compassionate Staff
Speaking of staff, the Materials Science department at Imperial is remarkably supportive. They truly care about students’ success and show understanding towards the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they fostered open communication with us, addressing our inquiries and offering guidance.

While I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support available until late in the year, I wish I had engaged with it sooner. One proactive step I took early on was becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position allowed me to build rapport with faculty members, which turned out to be extremely beneficial. Whether through formal roles or informal chats, getting to know your instructors and support staff is one of the best decisions you can make for yourself. My suggestion? Utilize the support and resources offered to you—there’s always room for more assistance.

### Reflections on What I’ve Learned
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to understand that the anxiety I felt—both prior to and throughout university—was often misplaced. With a wide variety of support systems available, from staff to fellow students, I was never truly on my own. This year has taught me how to navigate the pressures of exams and deadlines while also carving out moments of enjoyment and personal growth.

For anyone about to embark on their university experience: embrace the challenges, take those bold steps, and remember that help is always available.
