**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
A decade ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about the future. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and reticent, plunging into this new phase was a formidable challenge. Reflecting now, I recognize a year filled with development, trials, and unforgettable experiences. So, what insights did this year provide, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting obstacles I faced was cultivating friendships. For numerous incoming students, this ranks among the major worries of commencing university, and I was no different. On my initial day in student housing, just days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day secluding myself in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others.
Fast forward to today, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced. Here at Imperial, particularly within my program, I’ve discovered a second family. It all commenced with casual conversations and bonding with others in similar situations.
What insights did I gain from this experience? First, taking a leap of faith at the beginning of the year is worthwhile. Even if you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, there will be ample ice-breaker events and chances to connect with others. Second, the best approach is to simply be yourself. With such a diverse student body at the university, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Addressing the Academic Demands
Another considerable challenge was adapting to the course workload and complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first semester to the second proved even more demanding. Existing in such a rigorous academic setting can occasionally undermine your confidence, particularly when you notice others diligently studying and feel like you’re lagging behind.
What assisted me in navigating those moments of uncertainty was recognizing that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, there’s a good chance others are too. The critical lesson here is to seek assistance. This perhaps stands as the most vital takeaway from my first year. Don’t hesitate to contact your classmates or teaching staff—they are available to help you.
### The Value of Supportive Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the Materials Science department at Imperial is outstanding. The instructors and mentors genuinely want students to excel and are acutely aware of the challenges we encounter. They empathize with us and keep communication open throughout the year to address any issues.
Although I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until year-end, I regret not doing so earlier. At the beginning of the year, I took the initiative of becoming a year well-being representative. This role facilitated the development of relationships with faculty, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous methods to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My key insight here is to make the most of the support provided—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve realized that the anxiety I experienced—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—was frequently baseless. With the abundant support accessible from faculty and fellow students, those fears can diminish. I’ve discovered that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve learned to balance the pressures of exams and deadlines with moments of joy and enjoyment.
This year has been an expedition of self-discovery, growth, and learning to face challenges head-on. As I look ahead, I’m eager to explore what the next chapter of university life will bring.
