### Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I found myself enveloped in nervousness, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Plunging into the unknown wasn’t something my previously timid and reserved nature was accustomed to. Now, reflecting on the past year, it has proved to be transformative—filled with personal development, hurdles, and abundant joy. What have I gained from this experience, and where do I find myself now?
#### Conquering the Fear of Making New Connections
One of the most intimidating challenges I encountered early on was forging friendships. For many incoming students, this is a major concern when beginning university, and I was no different. On my initial day in student housing, merely a few days prior to the term’s commencement, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, feeling too intimidated to step out and introduce myself to others.
Fast forward to the present, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known—friends who feel akin to a second family. All it required was stepping outside my comfort zone and engaging in casual conversation with people who were just as apprehensive as I was.
What did I learn? Taking that first stride at the beginning of the year is vital. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there’s no need to stress—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, be your authentic self. With such a varied demographic at Imperial, you will inevitably discover those who resonate with you.
#### Addressing the Academic Hurdles
Another notable challenge was acclimating to the increased workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was apparent, and the transition from the first term to the second presented even greater challenges. This environment can sometimes undermine your confidence, especially when you observe others studying and feel as though you’re lagging behind.
What aided me in navigating this was the understanding that everyone shares similar struggles. If you’re finding it hard to grasp a concept, there’s a good chance others are having the same difficulty. The crucial part is to seek assistance—whether from your fellow students or the faculty. This is arguably the most significant lesson I gleaned during my first year: don’t shy away from requesting help.
#### The Importance of Supportive Staff
On the topic of support, the team within the Materials department is outstanding. They genuinely care about students’ success and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they fostered open dialogue with us, addressing our issues and offering guidance.
Even though I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support available until later in the year, I regret not using it sooner. Being a year well-being representative was one of the leaps I made at the year’s start, and it turned out to be a fulfilling experience. It enabled me to forge relationships with staff members, which was invaluable.
There are myriad ways to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My primary takeaway here is to utilize the support systems available to you—you can never have too much assistance!
#### Insights Gained
Reflecting on the past year, I’ve learned that the apprehension I felt before and during university was frequently unwarranted. With the extensive support available from both staff and fellow students, those fears were manageable. I’ve come to realize that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve discovered how to enjoy myself while also managing the inevitable stresses of examinations and deadlines.
As I look ahead, I feel thankful for the challenges I faced and the growth I’ve undergone. To anyone preparing to commence their university adventure, keep in mind: take the plunge, seek assistance, and make sure to relish the journey.
