**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Almost ten months ago, in October 2022, I embarked on a path that stirred feelings of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty within me. Commencing my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a freshman was akin to plunging into uncharted waters—an experience my previously timid and introverted persona was not familiar with. Now, as I reflect on a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and happiness, I feel compelled to contemplate the insights I’ve gained and the distance I’ve traveled.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting tasks I encountered at the onset of university was forming friendships. If you’re going through this as a future student, this might be a considerable concern for you as well. On my inaugural day in student housing, just prior to the term kicking off, I spent the entire day cloistered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet new people. Fast forward to the present, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve found some of the most remarkable friends I’ve ever known—friends who feel akin to a second family.
What turned things around? It all began with light conversation and the realization that everyone else was experiencing similar feelings. I understood that taking an early leap of faith is crucial. If you’re not quite ready initially, that’s perfectly fine—there are numerous icebreaker activities and chances to connect with others throughout the year. Most critically, I uncovered that being authentic is the most effective approach to bond with fellow students. With such a vibrant community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your passions and beliefs.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adapting to the demands and intricacies of university-level courses posed another major challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was palpable, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more formidable. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your skill set when you observe others studying and believe they’re ahead of you.
What aided me was realizing that everyone is grappling with the same issues. If you find something perplexing, it’s likely others are too. The essential action is to seek assistance—be it from classmates or teaching staff. Learning to pursue help is possibly the most valuable capability you can cultivate during your initial year.
### The Value of Supportive Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is exceptional. The instructors and mentors genuinely wish for students to thrive and are understanding of the obstacles we encounter. They maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the academic year, addressing our inquiries and offering support.
I didn’t fully leverage the available pastoral help until the year’s conclusion, and I regret not doing so earlier. At the beginning, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative, which enabled me to forge connections with faculty members. This experience proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and doing so can greatly enhance your university journey. My most significant takeaway? Make the most of the support systems at your disposal—you can never seek out too much help!
### Insights Gained
This year has enlightened me to understand that the anxieties and fears I endured before and even during university were frequently baseless. Thanks to the abundance of support from both staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely isolated. I’ve learned to juggle the pressures of exams and deadlines while still finding moments of joy and enjoyment, and I’ve evolved in ways I never envisioned.
If you are on the verge of starting your own university adventure, remember that it’s normal to feel anxious. But keep in mind, there’s a community here eager to support you at every stage. Take that step, welcome the challenges, and above all, savor the journey!
