**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was about to embark on my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being someone who has always been introverted and reserved, stepping out of my comfort zone was quite a challenge. Looking back on an academic year rich with growth, obstacles, and enjoyment, I can appreciate how much I’ve absorbed and the progress I’ve made.

### Taking the Plunge: Building Friendships

One of the most daunting tasks I encountered was forming friendships. The initiation of university life can be overwhelming, and if you’re a future student perusing this, it’s likely something that concerns you as well. On my first day in student housing, just prior to the start of term, I spent the entire day isolated in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself.

Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve forged some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced. At Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, and it all began with brief exchanges with individuals who were navigating the same circumstances as me.

What did I take away from this? Taking that step at the beginning of the year is vital. If you aren’t quite ready or comfortable immediately, don’t be anxious—there are numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Above all, be authentic. With such a varied array of people in the course and university, you’re sure to meet those who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another significant challenge was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was palpable, and the transition from the first term to the second term felt even more intense. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your abilities when you observe others studying and worry that you’re lagging behind.

What assisted me in persevering was the realization that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re finding something difficult to grasp, chances are others are too. The essential takeaway is to seek assistance—whether from your peers or the instructional staff. Learning to ask for help is arguably the most valuable skill to cultivate during your first year.

### Support from Faculty

On the topic of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is exceptional. The professors and tutors genuinely care about students’ success and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. They maintain clear communication throughout the year and are always prepared to assist.

While I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until the end of the year, I wish I had sought it out sooner. At the beginning, I took a significant step by becoming a year well-being representative, which enabled me to foster connections with faculty. This experience was invaluable, and I’d recommend others to find opportunities to engage with their lecturers and tutors. The help is available—don’t hesitate to utilize it.

### Essential Insights

This year has shown me that the anxiety I felt before starting university—and even throughout the year—was often unwarranted. With the broad spectrum of support options offered by faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone.

I’ve learned how to navigate the stress associated with exams and deadlines while cherishing moments of happiness and fun. Most importantly, I’ve realized that stepping beyond my comfort zone, whether to make friends or seek assistance, is always beneficial.

If you’re gearing up to begin your university experience, understand that it’s perfectly fine to feel anxious. But also recognize that you will grow, adapt, and find your fit. And when in doubt—seek support, be true to yourself, and take that leap.
