**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with apprehension, anxiety, and doubt about what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a freshman in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, jumping into university life seemed challenging. Now, reflecting on an academic year filled with personal growth, obstacles, and unforgettable experiences, I realize just how significant this journey has been. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Building Friendships
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was forging friendships. Beginning university can feel daunting, and if you are a future student reading this, you might share similar sentiments. On my first day in student housing, just a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day hiding in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the most amazing friendships I’ve ever experienced.
These connections have become like a second family to me at Imperial. All it required was a little conversation with others who were facing the same situation. What I took away from this experience is that making that initial move is essential. Even if you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret—there are numerous social events and opportunities to meet people. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re likely to find others who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Addressing Academic Obstacles
Adapting to the academic workload and rigors was yet another major challenge. The leap from A-levels to university was apparent, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or doubt your skills when you observe your peers studying and assuming they are faring better than you.
What assisted me in navigating these hurdles was recognizing that everyone is facing similar struggles. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, others probably are as well. The trick is to reach out for assistance. This might be the most vital lesson I learned in my first year—do not hesitate to seek help from classmates or instructors.
### The Significance of Encouraging Staff
On the topic of staff, the Materials department at Imperial is outstanding. The professors and teaching assistants genuinely care about our success and understand the challenges we deal with. They maintain open lines of communication throughout the academic year and are always ready to listen to our concerns.
While I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until late in the year, I regret not doing so earlier. Assuming the role of a year well-being representative was one of the initiatives I took at the beginning of the year, and it turned out to be a fulfilling experience. It enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which proved invaluable. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and I strongly recommend taking advantage of these opportunities. The support they provide is designed to help you flourish, so don’t hesitate to utilize it.
### Insights Gained
Looking back on my first year, I’ve come to understand that many of the fears I had—both prior to and during university—were misplaced. With the abundant support from both staff and fellow students, I was never truly alone. This year has instructed me on how to balance the pressures of exams and deadlines with enjoyable and light-hearted moments.
If I could share one piece of advice with incoming students, it would be this: accept the nervousness, take those leaps of faith, and don’t shy away from relying on the support systems surrounding you. University is a time for development, and you may be amazed at what you can accomplish when you step out of your comfort zone.
